Changing careers (or rather, rebooting them ...)

So - here I am, approaching 50 by the end of this year, and I am seriously contemplating my future. Way back in 1987 I graduated from Heald Business College at 29 years of age, and shortly got a position as computer operator with a major government contractor. Then the Berlin Wall came tumbling down and the military did not need that many government contracters. I fumbled around several years, and landed a position at a financial institution. It started with verifying transactions, and I used my computer skills to make the job easier and faster. My employer and I were happy. It took a decade, but the job morphed into something else. I take written requests from our customers, process the order if "in good order", or call either their representative or themselves to clarify or get the necessary paperwork required to process the request. And this, I really am not good at. I am surprised I haven't been fired yet, but I expect it coming. I feared it before, but I am braced for the impact. And it would be the best thing for me so I can update my computer education (I graduated when Windows 1.0 came out, just after PC DOS or MDOS 6.something ...) (Boy, weren't those the days ...) Fortuneately I do have some money saved up so I won't become immediately homeless and can pay for most if not all of my (ahem) refresher courses .... SO - any other baby boomers changing (or returning to lost) career paths
