is reading an addiction? i always catch myself looking for something to read when i have to wait. i read old magazines at the doctors office, i read whatever i can find if i am going to the loo, i will read whatever available when i am in a jam. is reading an addiction. i asks myself that all the time. i feel contented when i read. i buy the papers everyday but i read the same of sombre news and nothing that actually makes me jump for joy. so whats with the reading? anyone have an answer for me?

I don't know that it's an addiction. I don't think that I'm going to whither away and die if I don't read. I don't pawn my jewelry for books. But I do read a lot. I always have. I was one of those kids that read the cereal box at breakfast and the shampoo bottles when I was taking a bath. I have books everywhere and in my car and purse so that there is always something to read.

this is so strange. i could have sworn i replied to this response. anyway, i wager you have a book constantly with you in your car or somewhere as a backup just incase you have nothing to read. i know i do!

i love reading even if its not quality clancy type novels. i'd read anything. people who don't like reading always wonder why we spend our free time reading...i too wonder why but i find that my brain craves information coming in forms of reading material be it even a signboard.

I wouldnt say that constantly reading is an addiction but I also only feel something becomes and addiction when it interfers with ones daily life...Even so though, if reading can be an addiction, would it really be a bad one? I mean you learn so much, expand your mind/horizons/knowledge etc, are entertained, relaxed, destressed etc etc when you read so as long as its not interfering with your daily life..I wouldnt worry about it ;-)

reading isn't interferring with my daily live but i wonder how others can stand there not doing anything for hours. a few minutes of idle time i will reach out for reading material even to extend of reading the shampoo bottle.

I know when Im reading a really good book, it does get addictive and I can sit for ever reading this story and not wanting it to end. So yes I think reading can be an addiction, depending on how good a story it is...

i can understand wanting to read a good book all through to the end in one sitting, but what do you think of the continous craving for reading matter; always at the bookstore or reaching for something to read, even brochures.

The mind begs to be preoccupied with something that's why you always like to read. At least that's a sign that you're learning a lot from what you see. Just like you, I also occupy my mind by reading. If I have to wait, like in the pre-departure area of airports, I bring with me some reading materials to occupy my time. When I don't have anything with me, I read whatever is available. I prefer reading over TV, that's why even if I have to wait in areas with TVs, I still prefer to read if materials are available. If reading is an addiction, then it is a good kind of addiction because it fills the mind with informations.

it is creepy though always reaching for something to read. i sometimes wonder what goes inside the brain of another person that can sit at the doctors office doing nothing but staring at the wall or at the airport terminal staring at his feet.

I think it is an addiction. Because when I have a good book, I tend to finish it up to wee hours in the morning. Reading for me is therapeutic, and it's the best way to while away time especially when I am waiting for someone.

"wee hours in the morning"? been there and actually feeling guilty and stuck between finding out what happens next and getting that much needed sleep.
