Right age to adopt a kitten?

When we got our female cat she was about three weeks old. I think the neighbors gave her to us because she was sick and could barely walk. She's fine now. But, I've always wondered if they should have waited longer before separating the kitten from her mommy. How old should kittens be, before they are separated from their mother? What's the right age to let somone adopt your kittens?

8-10 weeks is ideal, that way the mother has taught them everything they need to know including toilet training and proper socialisation.

I've always heard between 6 and 8 weeks is a good time for kittens to be weaned. The youngest kitten I've adopted was 7 weeks and she did just fine. 3 weeks is a little young. But if she's fine now that's all that matters. You may notice she pads on things more often then other cats. I've heard that's a sign of a cat being weaned too soon.

Separate them when the mother starts to hit them, now they're old enough and she's fed up. It happens around 2 or 3 months. I have 2 sisters that are 1 year and a half, I found them on the streets when they were just 2 months, they could do anything without the help of an adult.
