Cat fights over the litter box

Currently, our two cats share the same litter box. But, I've noticed that the big male cat beats up on the female cat after she uses the litter box. I'm not sure if he considers it to be his sole litter box property or if he's mad at her for some other reason. Should I give each cat it's own litter box? Would that cut down on the cat fights?
