Why do people assume that the person answering the phone...

...is the person they want to reach? I work as a receptionist at a hospital. And people call and start giving me their life story before finding out if I'm the person they want/need to talk to. Its gotten to the point where I just listen quietly to them and then I calmly tell them that I'll transfer them to the nurse's station or to whomever they need to talk to. One person remarked that I was so patient. If she only knew. :-) Even the doctors call and say, "This is Dr. X, returning your call." I'm like no, but some of them insist that I DID. How about you, do you call a business and assume that the person who answers is the person you are trying to reach?

Well sometimes if I am amking a call like that I get so worried about what I have to say and stuff that when someone ansers the phone I start to pour out my tale to them and when they tell me I am at the wrong place and they're just directing calls I feel so embarressed. I suppose the people have just got so much on their mind that they forget about their call being directed first. Its good that you are patient with these people because obviously when it is concerning their health they can be very nervous. As for the doctors that call you back we can be nasty about them and just say they are ignorant cos I don't want to be too nicey nicey lol.

Heres an idea. Maybe when you answer the phone you can say something like Hello Hospital ..... speaking how may I direct your call?

Killahclaire, I had to chuckle at what you said about the doctors. However I get what you're saying about being so concerned about yourself or your loved ones that you forget that the person answering the phone may not be the one who will be able to assist you. Some of the doctors who have privileges here are quite full of themselves. Don't get me started. :-) Another pet peeve I have is when people call asking for "Beulah." Well we have at least 3 "Beulahs" here. Which one do you want to talk to? When they get huffy I want to say to them, there are over 250 employees working at this hospital on different days and different shifts and I only work here in the evenings for 5 hours do you expect me to know which "Beulah" you want to talk to? LOL LOL LOL Sorry, I guess I'm on my soapbox today. OK I'm off now.

Lol you must have had a very very bad day at work to be able to find this much to rant about. What I would od if someone is asking for as common name is just chose any one of them and put them through and hopefully they will get the right one and if not when they bounce back to you you can just tell how to conduct themselves properly on a telephone lol.

When I call a business, I usually start out with "I don't know who I need to talk to," and then briefly explain what I need. That is, of course, unless I do know who I need to talk to, and then I just ask for them. :) It's not just people calling businesses that do this, though. My fiance keeps telling me that he gets telemarketer calls on our home phone asking for "Mr." attached to my last name. They figure that he must be my husband, and that my last name is our married name... he just tells them that the person they are asking for doesn't live there. :)

I've learned to do what you do when you're calling a business. Nine out of 10 times the person answering the phone is more receptive when you start out that way. As for the telemarketer, I do the same thing or just don't answer the phone at all. My family and friends know that if they want to reach me they must call my cell phone. And I only give my cell phone number to a business if I really need to speak to them.

My last job was a customer service rep and in most of my other jobs I had to answer the phone or make calls on the phone. When making a call I would always state my name and ask to talk to whomever I needed to talk to and for what reason. My gripe when I answered the phone was the people who did not say who they were and just start talking to you like you knew who they were just by hearing their voice! Do they think you recognize the voice of everyone who calls you when you talk to maybe fifty people per day or more. Whenever they did that I had a hard time really listening to what they were saying until I could find out who I was talking to. Also, when taking orders from some of our customers they would just start giving you a bunch of numbers w/o letting you know that it's their credit card number and would give you an attitude when you asked what they were talking about. I also loved the ones that changed their mind twenty times before they finished ordering. I could go on and on.

Nope, I am surprised when I get a person and so if and when I do I realize that they probably will need to transfer or connect me to who can handle my call. I often have a name so I call and ask for that person by name and on a rare occasion it is who I am seeking. I deal in reality and do not assume to know how every business works. Good luck in the future when your callers.

I'm often surprised too. :-) Do you mentally prepare your speech to leave on their voicemail too? Me too. :-) I remember once I was calling my cell phone company and their computers is set where they will NOT transfer you to an operator until they're d... good and ready. So I kept saying "operator" and the computer kept telling me, "I'm sorry, I can't transfer you to an operator right now!!" Man that was frustrating. :-) I finally just hung up because their menu didn't have an option for what I wanted to talk to them about. Anywho...... :-)

Most of the time no. The last job I had before I became a SAHM was being an administrative assistant and it was my job to answer the phones. So I guess from all those years of having to answer the phone and being that person that people think I am. I have gotten to where when I call a business I say "I am not sure if you can help me on this, but here is my situation. Could you direct me to the right person". But I do know your frustrations. I have been in your shoes before! Best of luck!

Yes, I do that too...say that I hope that the person answering the phone can help me or direct me to who can. The other thing is that when I call a private home I ask if they have time to talk. And I don't get offended if they can't. If I get a call I tell them if I have time to talk or I just don't answer the phone.

I can't even get a real person when I call anyplace. It seems like all I ever get are recordings. But, I would think in a hospital people would realize it's a big place and know you are the receptionist. You must have a lot of patience to be able to handle that.

Some days it takes effort, especially if the hospital is near capacity in patients. I don't know what's going to happen when we add ten extra beds that they're building a wing for.

I don't think I do that, but then I don't really place that many calls so it's been a while. I just think that is what people do when they don't really know who they need or what to say. Maybe they hope giving you their whole story, you might be able to direct them in the right direction.
