How poor do you have to be to get food stamps? I have $2,000 in savings and for two people my boyfriend and I only bring in $500 a month at most and according to the Virginia Department of Social Services that is too much. If you factor in the cost of housing and my car that we share I don't have enough for food every month or anything else for that matter. How do I not qualify?

Not to be rude but if you have $2,000 in savings, you must be doing something right. Also, I'm sure that they figure in what the boyfriend is bringing in. It's combined amount that both of you make. People with kids will get accepted faster then a couple.

You know I read what everyone said in response to your question and that is always the way I thought it was. But I used to work at our county Probate Court - once a month our courtroom was used for the agency in charge of food stamps as they didn't have an office in our area. Many of those people coming in to renew their food stamps had on more expensive clothes than me and I worked 40 plus hours a week. Go figure - I guess some people just know how to work the system. Not that most of the people didn't look as if they needed the help but it was just obvious that some of them didn't.

Same for us. We went at the urging of my friends and we only wanted it temporarily while we regrouped after our fire. They said that I had assumed that I could get things from the agency and I did not know what they had to offer. Had only heard of food stamps. Well the interview did not go well. I had a job and they wanted me over a certain amount of hours to look for a job inside their job store. I homeschool and they did not care. Needless to say we did not get them either. So we have plowed through the retirement money that was saved and now in a rental. Fortunately we have a local church that hands out food on a monthly basis and according to income we qualify for that. Funny isn't it!? Anyway, check out the local church and see if there is a food bank near you. Good luck and I hope things will start looking up for you and yours.

I'm not sure what the income level is, but the asset limit is $1000, so the $2000 that you have in savings would automatically disqualify you for food stamps. I think that the way they see it is that you could spend the money for food instead of having it in a savings account.

I would think that you don't qualify because of the savings that you have. If you have a large amount of savings they will figure that you can use that to buy food. I know that $2,000 is way to much income for a month to qualify. Where I live it is very hard to qualify unless you have children.

I get food stamps even though I work, but I only work 3 days a week and every little bit helps since the price of groceries are ridiculous. They go by any income that comes into your household and you can't make, but so much money and that makes you mad. If you're a dollar over whatever their maximum income is you don't qualify. I have two kids who get medical assistance, but the one they try to offer me is want $30 a month and I don't have it like that.

I don't know anything about food stamps, but I was going to suggest the Angel Food Ministries, too. I buy their package deals almost every month and am pleased with what you get for $25. I also have a cousin who works for Harvesters and they pass out food to those in need on certain Saturdays at some of the churches in my area, you might check into that also. Or maybe even a Goodwill store might be able to give you some more ideas. Good luck!
