Bill and Hillary are good at finding the way around the rules. The McCain-Feingold bill put a limit on what someone could donate to a campaign at $2000. Bill & Hillary held private fund raising events at their mansion in D.C. Potential donors have also paid to see their 3-story dutch colonial in Chappaqua, New York, and for a few thousand dollars, people have paid just to meet the Clintons socially. The amounts of money in this upcoming presidential campaign is just staggering.

They used to rent out rooms in the White House for their guests too, as a way to get money and garner support.

I remember that! I couldn't believe it at the time! How tacky! And not sure charging for staying in the white house is legal?

Actually the limit is $2300 to the candidate and also to the party. All contributions of $200 are recorded. So far the contributions are 26M just over Barack Obama. Anyone can pay anyone else for dinner, tours or whatever they want. This is an activity that all politicians engage in. Some are just better at it. Because we adopted children with disabilities and all things are political I spend a great deal of time with politicians. They all have "dinners" that can cost anywhere from $200 on up to thousands. This is America and although things aren't perfect it sure beats not living in a free election country.

Thanks for the correction. I'm just getting more deeply into politics this year and find it fascinating. I didn't know about the dinner/tours thing as a normal thing.

Just because you are good at fundraising doesn't mean you will win the election. Too bad politicians do not raise money for those less fortunate!
