Do We Really Need to Commute to Work?

The most wasteful time of our day is our drive to work and back home. We waste time, fuel, wear and tear on our vehicles and money. It is time that we are doing what our employers require, yet most of us aren't getting paid for it. How many of our jobs actually need to be done at a central location? Yes, there are many jobs that do, it wouldn't work to install machines in our homes to run our part of an assembly line. Some jobs must be done at different locations. You can't really be a plumber from your home. So much money, assets, and time would be saved if those who could do their work from home did. Could you do your job from home? Would you want to?

Good morning ParaTed, You're absolutely correct about proposing increased tele-commuting. I would love to be able to do just that. Unfortunately, it isn't feasible for me. Yet, I still keep wishing it were. Fortunately, there are many more people tele-commuting now than there were even five years ago. So, hopefully the trend will continue.

True, telecommuting is catching on. Employers are learning that it's much cheaper to pay someone to work at home than to provide space, bathrooms, breakrooms and other facilities. Millions are wasted on cubicles for phone banks, data entry, medical transcriptions, payroll... etc. Our commuting practices have to move forward from the bygone days of the industrial age.

I'd love to, but when I checked into it in my area, all I got were rolling eyes and attitude. Apparently around here they think people who want to work from home are just lazy.

I would love to have a job I could do from home. I'm somewhat disabled and unable to work for more than a few hours at a time. But I could do eight hours worth of work by doing it a little at a time with rests between. So I think it would be a good idea for getting many disabled people back to work. I couldn't have done my former job at home, though. I was a therapist in the prison system and I don't think I'd want the prisoners going home with me! :-)
