Are they some kind of extra set of vertabra, or a daemoniac antennae to the hoary netherworld? Some kind of flashy fashion statement from nature, or some bizarre mutation of a half-living entity leeching nutrients from its host's body? Of course it's a dexterous communication tool (muzzles make facial expressions a bit awkward), but is it also a savage facial-whipping utensil? Does it pick up AM or FM? Perhaps the golden age of radio's classic audio dramas from satellite radio?
Is it a fishing rod? A lasso? A duster? Crumb collector? Divining rod? Donut holder? Electrical plug? Is it secretly the brains of the whole operation? A laser cannon? Flag? In style?
What does your cat use his or her tail for? What would you use it for?

First I was going to say... Well the tail is actually an extension of the spine...and be all technical and exact. Then I continued reading.
My cat scares himself with his tail. He wags it... then he hits it on something and jumps not realizing it was his own tail.
He also uses his tail to talk to me. Not just the obvious "angry tail" or "rattle snake happy tail"... he answers my questions with his tail. "Are you my handsome Reggie Cat" rattle snake wag. "you a rotten cat" swooshing tail. "you a bad cat?" doesn't move the tail at all.
He also uses it to wrap around my leg or my face as a sign of love...
