What does the expression LOL mean?

I have been reading the expression LOL in many of the discussions, first I thought it was someone's user name, but it appears in different posts, so what does it mean, is it a common expression in a language I don't know?

LOL means: Laughing Out Loud. It is just a way for people who are communicating in words to express that they found something funny and are laughing out loud. I was actually fasinated that you did not know this one. I thought everyone knew what LOL meant. I am glad I was able to share with you the meaning. We all learn something new everyday.

I always thought I knew English language well, but it seems there are new expressions that our generation has to learn again. Thanks for telling me and I am sure if you took a poll of those above 40 to see how many know this expression I think you will be even more fascinated. LOL. I hope I used it right?

LOL mean laugh out loud. It is just an abbreviation to save people from typing out the entire saying. There are a lot of them that are used.
