Why do some people try so hard to be a certain label?

I don't get it. Why can't people just be themselves? They try so hard to fit into one label when other people are trying so hard to break out of the same label. For instance, I know this girl who was trying so hard to be goth that it is starting to look stupid. She'd wear black and long sleeves in the middle of summer. She does things that normal goths do but her personality is far from it. I mean... how many goths do you know like to watch High School Musical and actually know the steps and dance it just coz she wants to? Isn't it easier to just be yourself? If your friends really are your friends, then they'd accept you for whoever you are regardless of your 'label'.

I see what you're saying. it makes no sense for someone to try and fit into a label when being themselves is not only easier, but lets more people get to know them.

That's right. And besides, you're fooling nobody but yourself.

Hi amehzin, I just posted a question about friendship and open, honest discussions and would appreciate your views on it. In regard to your question. I think people act and dress in ways that express how they feel about themselves on the inside. I struggled with two eating disorders for years. I was only able to permanently break free from that compulsive coping pattern when I changed what I believed about myself. I agree with you labels are like velcro...they only stick if we allow them to. You deserve a lot of credit to have figured out that it is who we are on the inside that matters. Outside appearances are often misleading and I agree...it is time to let labels and stereotypes go and look deeper.
