What Terrible Economy?

I hear naysayers and doomsdayers spouting off about how bad the U.S. economy is. I think these people are either profiting from their smoke and mirror game, or just too politically against the current administration they can't see reality anymore.
Our job market has absorbed record downsizing, outsourcing and moving overseas. Our economy has absorbed record hurricanes and other natural disasters. Our economy has absorbed rampant spending by state and federal governments. Gas prices are at record highs, and so is travel by car. There are no gas lines. Through illegal aliens, we are supporting the economies of several other nations.
If you want to see a bad economy, look back to the 70s. Double digit inflation, prime lending rate and unemployement.
The only thing depressed about our economy are those who want it to be bad so they can whine about it. They are missing the freedom train... their loss.

Many folks who are politically active, and are disappointed with the current economy were not alive or aware of the gas lines, unemployment and inflation of the 70s.
All they have to compare is the dotCom bubble and it's, well, creative bookkeeping.
However, there are segements of the population that do need to see some improvement-- the amount of high risk loans out there, and that are defaulting is dangerous. As the housing boom levels off, that is going to be one mess that will cause a lil speedbump in the economic growth of the US. (Particularly those ARMs that are getting interest raised.)
Now locally, some economies are real messes. Here in Pittsburgh there are folks losing their houses, not because they were stupid enough to get ARMs, but because their property taxes keep getting raised past their ability to pay. It's clearly a case where a local government has lost sight of the fact it exists to be 'for the people' and not just by some of them.

Yeah, we have definitely lost our sense of history.
yes, there are local economies that are really hurting. The biggest threat to them though is exactly what you mentioned. People are being taxed out of their homes and businesses are being taxed to the point that it's either move locations elsewhere or close up shop completely.

I think we just have to be really great managers and learn all we can about managing our finaces, short term and long term....to be a penny wise and not a pound foolish...

Yup, for all the trashing of management going on, they are doing their jobs! If they weren't, we would be seeing a lot worse problems. Of course, they aren't doing a great job everywhere... and you can tell where they aren't by the local economy.

The USA's economy is very strong, but alot of people in America hate Bush. Facts do not matter with these people, they hate Bush. So Bush can not be a success with anything, including the economy. In their eye's it is a terrible economy because it's Bush's economy. If Gore or Kerry had won it would be the best ever while excempt Clinton's. Clinton's economy had six years of Republican controll of congress but that is talked about. Anyway Gore and Kerry would have destoried the economy, just like all the Democrates will do. It is in their nature. Tax and spend, tax and spend that is what they all say. But I have got of subject. Reagan never got credit for reviving Carter's economy because it was Reagan. So to with Bush. Liberals can not be objective, they just can't be. It is not their nature. Truth is they hate Republicans. If the Sun went out tomorrow Lib's would blame the Republicans, and Bush most of all.

I always gauge the economy by the construction evident or not evident in our city. And everywhere I look these days there are new buildings going up, commercial buildings. The economy doesn't look depressed to me.

It's the biggest and most successful economy in the world. There are always going to be local ups and downs - and the role of government is to help those in need to get back on their feet and become productive again.
In a world of outsourcing and cheap labour, the US economy has done a great job in staying competitive and growing. I'm not sure whether you are implying that the current Administration is responsible for it - I certainly think that the spirit and hard work of companies and workers is what has kept the economy on top, not government. And that's how it's supposed to be, isn't it?

Actually, I only give any administration a small degree of credit or blame for the economy. Prs. Clinton's great economy was largely due to the Reagan administration (for example).
The only real difference the executive branch can make is a policy of optimism that translates to an optimistic outlook by the people. Tax cuts help, but are more reliant on Congress than the president.
We have most of the responsibility when it comes to the economy. Are we buying and selling big ticket items? Is our income keeping things moving? If so, the economy will run on healthy highs and lows. If not... the economy will not.
