don worry..... i know it is a hereditary disorder but if you exercise regularly and take balanced diet with less of fatty foods, sugar and confectionaries you can avoid diabetes. I am also at risk of getting diabetes as My dad and grandmom has it but i take care of my diet and do exercise. maintain your weight too. Take Care

I am sorry to hear it. Please don't worry, you just have the possibility to have it. If you keep on a good diet and do some sports from now on, I think this possibility will be very low.

I was diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago and I was really upset. I didn't really know much about it, my mum had had it for about 7 years already but had played down how serious it is, she is on medication to control her sugar levels and she got it in her mid 50s. I got diagnosed when I was 38 and was pretty mad with my doctor for not having diagnosed it when I went in to a year previously with the symptoms and they never picked it up. AND they knew my mother was diabetic and that I was overweight so they should have had the sense to warn me earlier. Anyway forget all that, I don't know how old you are but what I know now and what I suggest to other people who have a parent with diabetes is to start watching your weight as a matter of urgency. Being overweight gives you more chance of becoming diabetic even if your parent doesn't have it. You should watch your sugar intake and take regular exercise. Apparently drinking 3 or 4 cups of tea or coffee a day can help prevent diabetes (I had no idea about that but I've never been a tea or coffee drinker in my life so that wouldn't have helped me). Here are some links with some really useful information - remember, it's all very well asking questions like yours on this site but it is preferable to get professional advice on things like this. You never know if some malicious person might be giving you the wrong advice deliberately or just through their own lack of knowledge. http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/healthissues/diabetes/ http://www.diabetes.org.uk/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/conditions/diabetes/ http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp Good luck. :)

My mom also has diabetes, I too am worried about getting it! I think that there are many things we can do to prevent ourselves from getting it. Although I have some ideas, I would advise you to seek the advice of a soctor, because there are many different types of diabetes:)

Very glad my response was helpful. An insulin pump delivers insulin in 2 ways...I get small amounts of insulin 24/7 just like a normal pancreas does and then it gives me insulin every time I eat...I tell it how many carbs I am eating and it recomends a dose according to the information it has been programmed with. It is inserted with a needle that is withdrawn leaving a tiny canula in my skin...the site where it is,is changed every 4-5 days....so lots less needles for me and much better control of my blood sugars. At first the idea of having this thing attached to me all the time was a bit scary...but it's the best thing I ever did. The pump itseld is no bigger than a cell phone or pager. I had become what is known as "brittle"...no matter how hard i tried sugars were out of control and the doc put it to me this way...it will save you eyes, your kidneys, your legs and your life...so no brainer there...lol

I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 16 and now wear an insulin pump. Neither of my parents have diabetes. What I would suggest is of course watch your weight and diet. It is not just sugar you need to avoid. Carbohydrates are directly related to your sugar levels in fact my insulin doses are based on how many carbs I eat. There are good carbs and bad carbs...good carbs come from fruit and vegetables that are whole. The more fiber the better, for instance a raw apple with the skin on is much healthier than apple juice. The longer it takes your digestive system to break down what you have eaten the better. Bad carbs....anything starchy like white bread, bagels etc. The South Beach diet has lots of good tips on good and bad carbs. I know everyone gets tired of hearing about carbs but, it really is all about the carbs. Just don't try and eliminate them totally that is not good either....main thing is choosing the right ones.
