The Kindness of Strangers

Things I hate about cars, number 26. Cars like to have issues at the most inopportune times. Like when the store is JUST far enough away that you can't really walk there and back, and you're rushing out to buy a much needed phone card. This particular time, the car battery decided to drain, hence rendering our central locking system completely freaking useless! Things I hate about Cars number 32. After been given a jump start with the jump cables, we go on our merry way, only to have the battery die on us at the busiest intersection in our area. This happened to us tonight as we headed out. My partner forgot to turn his lights off when he arrived home from work, and so our car battery drained. When we discovered that, we sat like prats in the parking lot and hoped that someone on their way out would give us a jump. Five minutes later, we were on our way after a guy who lives in a ground floor apartment saw us with our jump cables and came to us with his truck. We'd never seen him before and he was so friendly and helpful. As we reached the intersection, the car engine cut out again and we got stuck at the lights. Cars behind us started with their horns, out came the cables again, and up went my blood pressure. Within 5 minutes three people had tried to help. One guy attempted to back up at the intersection till an idiot of a driver decided to drive past us and join the lane in front, effectively cutting off the other driver. A lady tried to change lanes in order to give us a jump, not easy because the lights were on red and the traffic wasn't moving, and finally, seconds after that, a guy in a truck driving in the opposite directions stopped and gave us another jump. We made it to the store where I was left in the car with the engine running to make sure it was running okay, and then we headed out for dinner. Thankfully, the car has been fine since then. The point I want to make here is the kindness of people we've never seen before and probably never will again. In an increasingly "ignore others problems" kind of world, it gave me hope that there are still some people out there who think enough of others to stop and give a hand. Have you ever had a total stranger help you out in some way? What happened and how did they help? How did it make you feel knowing that others do care? P.S. Things I hate about my partner number 2. He forgets to turn his car headlights off upon arriving home from work :P

Well Sweetie here in the UK it is that bad now People do not trust anymore so it is not often that someone will stop to help I know I am very weary to stop to help now it is to dangerous. But a lot of People have Mobiles now so they normally phone for help I would still love to stop and help but I just dare not to anymore

I couldn't get ehat number 26 and 32 meant but here is my story. My hubby had to leave for a month and had to take a train from Delhi. We were stationed in Meerut about a 3 hours drive from Delhi. I decided to go and see him off and took my son along. While coming back it was almost seven in the night and we still had not crossed Delhi border. What happened was our vehicle broke down and we were stuck on the highway. A passing car stopped and asked us what happened. As the driver was checking the vehilce he saw open hood and came over. that guy stayed with us till my driver got the car fixed and even towed our car to the nearest garage. when we were on our way he left us and I was so silly I never took his number. I really feel tremendous gratitude for him as he genuinely helped us that might and never expected anything in return.

How amazing for those people to stop and help when it was so busy. The time that sticks out in my mind was when I first drove over 3 hours to this town to look at this house I would maybe buy. It's 60klms from the nearest town and about 20 klms from the end of my journey my car began to overheat. It's practically a straight, flat road. I pulled over and went to use my mobile phone to call road service...no signal. After a few minutes someone came driving along and stopped. This older gentlemean asked if he could help explaining that he was on his way to my town to pick up an elderly lady to bring her to a hospital appointment. I asked him if he could please convey a message to my friend at the service station, or if not there, to the people in the cafe and ask them to pass it on. He said he would try and kept apologising that he had to keep his appointment and off he went. The next car to pass also stopped and the next...in fact everyone who drove past stopped except for one bloke. He just kept going about 500 metres down the road he stopped, turned around and came back to ask if he could help. There were about a dozen cars and 4wds who stopped to offer help. My friend turned up, I barely knew him then and he pulled apart my water pump, removed the thermostat, made a gasket out of the cardboard from a notepad I was carrying and got me going on my way. 19 months later, it's still ok. I was blown away by the total kindness of all these folk. I think that was part of my decision to go ahead and buy my house.
