Long term or short term relationship?

Is it better to be in a long term relationship or a short term relationship? Why are people even in a relationship in the first place? I've seen many kids already started saying, "I'm in love", "I have a boyfriend", or "I'm married". I don't believe any of them because I know they'll probably break up in the end. Whenever someone is interested in me, I'd always tell them to be just friends and they're always in a rush to be in a relationship. Even if I'd agree to "go out" with someone, I expect that we would be in a long term relationship...I mean, that is the point of going out in the first place right?
