Do you cook ahead?

I have been working on cooking ahead for an entire month. Its exhausting work, but the benefits can outweigh that. You save in utility bills, its good for your health and you spend less time in the kitchen overall, which means more time with your family. I like the thought of having already prepared food that I can take down and thaw, heat and we can eat. That also means less trips to fast food restaurants and their death food.

I sure do envy you for being able to cook ahead...our family's been planning (operative word being planning) to do that but somehow, we never did get around to doing that--I guess that our fridge need to have a major overhaul first since our freezer especially is jampacked! But sure would love to be able to do that someday--though I gota say though that sometimes, cooking can be the highlight of my day=)

That is such a cool tip =) Now, if only I can sneak into our freezer & toss out the UFOs (as my sister puts it--unidentified frozen objects, that is!) I tell you, it's pretty hard if your mom is the ultimate savior to the foods queen (but I do also mean it in a good way, coz it's just not good to waste food & all that) but sometimes, you do get suspicious what's in your meatloaf, right? ;)

No, I never had that problem, because I watched what mom put in her meatloaf. lol. However, there are times that stuff manages to get forgotten in the fridge and starts to become a science experiment. lmao!

Hehe kudos to you for being vigilant on what your mom puts in your meatloaf! =) LOL I guess that the mystery of what's in it adds a dimension of flavor to it ;) I swear sometimes when I clean our fridge, it can be pretty intimidating on what I'd find out in some of the containers (especially waay in the back) Can I say fuzzy & furry?? Yikes! Kidding aside, cooking sure is a science in itself, huh? Happy cooking to you! =)

Hey. Usually when Im cooking for BBQ parties or family dinners, like salads or rice n pasta dishes, casseroles and stews, I get them all ready at around midday, so that I dont have to rush around later on and we can all eat on the time we have set. I also prepare and cook or pre-cook for my childrens trips or fundraisers the night before or early that morning, after workout n shower...

i usually plan one week in advance for a week's menu and that's it... i can never gone beyond one week as my brain just can't think of many recipes at ones... you are amazing... you can cook for an entire month... i don't know how are you going to store the food... my fridge is already very full just for storing a week's food... i think it is because i only have a small fridge...

I can understand that. We have lots of freezer space, including a chest freezer in the garage. So I cook the food, and store it in the freezers. As I explained to another poster, what you can do is when you cook, put the food into ziplock bags and when you store them, spread out the food so the bag is 1/2 in thick or so and lay flat in freezer. When it is frozen, it will be a flat bag of food that you can stack or store upright and it will only take up a litte room.

Wow, a month's worth of cooking, that is a lot. You must have a huge freezer. Do you plan a menu, so that you remember what you have and don't do all the chicken at once? Don't you miss cooking on the grill or do you cook spontaneously sometime? I like to cook 3 or 4 meals at a time, using a huge crockpot helps. Cook in there, eat a meal and save a meal.

Yes, we have a chest freezer. And that helps alot. I do grill, in fact when dh comes home, we have patio steaks planned for grilling... so I do some spontanieous cooking, but not often. I just don't have the time. Most of my time is spent feeding a 3 week old. As for my regular menu, I do have a list of recipes that I cook from. I may change them up here and there to keep a spark, but it will be the same base ones most of the time. That way I know what I have to buy each month....

No, I don't think I could do that. I usually pick my recipes out for the week and then decide on the day what I'm going to make that night. Plus, I love to cook and only cooking once a month or so and meals for the whole month would drive me crazy! Cooking is like a break to me. It's fun to try new recipes all the time. If I find a recipe I like, I want to make it...I couldn't wait until the next month to do it!

I agree that cooking is awesome. I also have the other side of the coin though, less dishes... lol.. I too love to cook, but just don't have time to fix a meal most days, so this helps me out...

No, I'm not used to cooking ahead of time or ahead of every meal. I usually prepare meals an hour and half before meal time. My family get used to eat newly cooked meals. And i guess its still a preference and the like of everyone.

To each their own. I have a new baby, so cooking ahead for me is essential right now, or we won't eat most days. lol.

Wow...a whole month ahead? I'm not that organized...nor do I have that much freezer space. but I do like to try to make large portions of a few things for the week and freeze some for later use. This is especially good when making soups. I keep someout for eathing now and stash some in the freezer for later. You are right, it does keep me away from fast food, since I knwo there is most often something in the freezer that I can make. I like cooking, but it's nice not to spend every night...all night in the kitchen :-)

I'm a stay at home mom with a seperate freezer, so its easier for me to plan and cook ahead. Although just barely! After all I have a 4 year old and a 3 week old, so time is precious. lol. I love cooking too, and actually find it relaxing, but I just don't have enough time most days to get a meal on the table every night. I did this to save both time and money. After all, if I have a preset menu for the month, then the only thing I have to shop for is meat and veggies.
