What "aids" did you use to help you "Quit Smoking" and did they work?

Nicorette Inhaler - Stop smoking aid

After smoking for more than 40 years, (yes I know, I'm older than dirt) and trying to quit many times and failing, this year, January 01, 2007 at 12:00am I decided I would try again. I had tried all the No Smoking aids out there, but none of them seemed to really work. I used the Nicoderm Patch, a 3 step program that gradually weans you off of nicotine(you exchange arms every 24hrs. and don't place it on the same spot as before) and after 2 weeks, I had to quit using it because everywhere that I had placed a patch had started to swell into a bright red 2"x2" welt, I went to the doctor and he told me I was allergic to the ingredients used in the making of the patch, and besides, the patch didn't seem to be working. I still had the urge and "cravings" to smoke. I didn't want to use the no smoking pill, I heard a lot about it and it all wasn't great, so the pill was out of the question. I tied the gum, but the gum is like a cigarette substitute when you can't have a smoke, like when you are in a meeting or something like that, the gum is perfect for that. This time I was going to try the "Nicorette Inhaler" and I am totally glad that I did. The kit comes with a holder (it looks like a cigarette holder), and cartridges that you insert into the holder when ever you have the urge to have a smoke. Each cartridge has a wad of cotton in the middle that is saturated with some kind of clinical nicotine and lasts for about 20 minutes, like smoking 2 cigarettes, so you can use it once and save it for the second use later on, when you need another smoke. The difference with this "Stop Smoking" aid and all the others is that you have something to do with your hands, like when you smoke a cigarette. You take it out of your mouth and put it back just like smoking. That's whats missing with all the other no smoking aids out there. The kit comes with a holder and (the one that I bought) had 42 cartridges and was around $38.00 Canadian. Then you can buy just the cartridge pack after that, you already have the holder. I used the product for a total of almost 2 months and only smoked 2 cigarettes in that time, but by the end of February 2007, I didn't even need the inhaler anymore. What made me realize that I was over smoking was when I went to work. Every morning I would make sure I had my Inhaler with me and a "Sheet" of cartridges (7 on a bubble sheet). That day I came home and realized that I had not taken my inhaler with me, and never even once thought about smoking or had the urge for a smoke. I WAS AMAZED! I was smoke free. So if you plan on giving NO SMOKING a try, my advice to you is try the Nicorette Inhaler, you'll be glad you did, if I can quit smoking, anyone can.

I never seemed to have any health problems when I was smoking, and sometimes I wonder if it was all worth it. But it has been 6 months now without a smoke, which I think is totally amazing in itself !

I was able to quit cold turkey because I have the type of mind set where I will *not* be controlled by a substance. It's my body, I have control over my body and I will choose what I put into my body. When I started thinking like that, a lot of things (including becoming a non-smoker) became easier in life.

Might I ask, "For how long did you smoke" ?

Of course - eleven years. I know, not as long as must quitters - but it was still a long time to me. :-)

First I tried quit smoking by just stop like that. But i started again after 3 months. Next time I quit after taking some pills. Its kind of anti depresiva stuff. Cant remember the name. But that helped. I havent been smoking for 5 years now. Of course not use those pills for more than 2 weeks.
