This a huge question. One that can't be answered in a simple post. Different types of music are labeled sometimes by their beat, their key, their style, etc. Rap, for instance, has a definite, regular beat to which someone talks, not sings, in time with the beat. Jazz is usually instrumental and has a lot of different musicians doing different things within the same key, usually what they call an atonal key.
If you are really interested in understanding different kinds of music, you might want to get a book or tape which explains it. There are so many kinds it would take a long time for anyone to try and explain it to you here. A very, very good question, though.

There are all kinds of rock, some of which I don't know how to recognize either. Hip-hop, acid rock, alternative, hard rock, 50's rock, crossover rock...all kinds. I don't like acid rock. It sounds a lot like screaming to me and I can't hear any melody or beat to it. But that is my prejudice. I'm sure an acid rock lover could explain why they like it! Crossover rock is a blend of country and western and rock and roll. Elvis Presley was a well know crossover rock singer.

I too don't know any thing about these music. I enjoy them although. We have our own ethnic music here in our country and state. So naturally we enjoy that music most. Popular here are movie songs. Do you know that every Indian movie will have four or five beautiful songs in them? We mostly enjoy these movie songs. We have very rich classical music also. Any way I will watch the responses in this discussion to understand the defferences between the various forms of western songs.
Thank you.
