Cyber Prayer?

Do you participate in "Cyber Praying"? Do you think that using a glowing monitor screen as an intercessor is effective and brings you towards holiness? Cyber prayer makes me uncomfortable, so I avoid it. instead of folding hands in prayer our fingers tickle the keyboard. we create a circle (coven if you will) around our very separate glowing monitor screens reading facsimiles. instead of dipping into holy water, one sips their coffee, soda or favorite beverage. Instead of falling to our knees, instead we sit on computer chairs. Instead of humility it seems much is about showing off our clever compositions - boasting of holiness perhaps? ------------------- has any of you felt the same discomfort?

wow, cyber prayers. I never even heard of that term. It seems now a days that "bible thumpers" (hope I spelt that right), are seeking out ways to make themselves feel more relaxed knowing that they have paid their "dues" in prayers to "god". I think that none of this stuff is even necessary. There is no need for a church for the sole purpose of praying, let alone sitting in front of a bunch of electrical liquid crystal flashing before your eyes and then praying to it. If people are honest and really wanted to pray, then I think that simply praying in your house would have all the full impact as if you were at church or where ever you normally do your praying. I'm aetheist, but everyone in my house is a buddhist or Christian or Baptist, and this is what I tell them: "Pray in your own room people, so I can watch football on Sunday." (When its football season that is, otherwise I have no other excuse, but to attend church with them).

you bring up an interesting point - as a Catholic how many times I have heard it accused that I am praying to a statue, if a statue happens to be near me when I am praying to my God (not the statue) yet, these same people will "cyber pray" by their own judgments are they not praying to the monitor?

Didn't Jesus say that their shall be no "Gods Before Me". I think he meant computer monitors also.

I hve never heard of cyber prayer. I personally would never do anything like that. Is that really praying to Heavenly Father or is that seeking acceptance from cyber friends??? I would never participate in anything like that. I take my Spiritually seriously and pray to a higher power than can be reached on the internet.

I have participated in online religious rituals, which is something like what you are talking about. In some cases it just seemed cold and pointless to me, and I didn't get anything out of it. However, once in a while with the right group of people, I'll just get a connection, and feel all the energy flowing, and it just feels right and holy. I think any medium can be proper for spiritual activity as long as it's held in the right mindset, honestly. I think the main use of such religious activity is for people who can't get out of their homes, or who are isolated from others of their own faith. I know I have been in places where no one around me believed as I did, and even a connection over the internet to someone willing to help me with my spiritual practice meant a lot to me!

I've been to chat rooms where they do this and want everyone to stop so they can pray. I personally don't care for it because I'm reading line after line and it doesn't always come up very fast so you wait. I prefer listening to a prayer when I'm praying in a group or in church instead of looking at my screen and watching someone slowly piece together a prayer as I'm waiting and my mind is wandering. I know they are sincere but I just don't feel comfortable with it.

I do practice "Cyber Prayer". As far as discomfort doing it....Not at all, I enjoying praying with friends online and by emails. Hey, when we need prayer warriors to pull together...nothing wrong with email or blogging for all that matters. Can reach everyone all over the world, its wonderful. Don't get me wrong, I still pray normally throughout the day, on my knees, as necessary under my breath...which seems like often. Prayer shouldn't be looked at as boasting holiness....even though some people may only pray to be boastful, but not me. Prayer is ...my time with the Lord, He's my best friend and I can't stand to just go through the day without saying anything to Him.

I guess you were meaning in chat rooms...."Cyber Praying"...That I haven't done. What I do participate in is a Prayer Chain by email or blogging on my person blog. Which is usually someone sends in a specific prayer need and I pray along side them by email, as if I was there in person. Prayer is a good thing!!!!

I do 'cyber pray' quit often actually and have both prayed for others and had others pray for me and they were very spiritual prayers. Often I have to leave the computer after reading or writing because of the tears I shed. Personally I think it is like any other 'action' it depends on the person or people involved and the situation. If say someone here on myLot asks for prayers I will do my best to put my prayers into words, on the screen, so as the person reading knows what I have prayed and not that I'm just saying 'I'll pray for you' only to forget a second later. I don't think it boasting or showing off at all - my prayers come from my heart no matter how they are convied.

I suppose there are people that say they'll pray for you as a means of converstation only, but I know for a fact that there are people who really do pray for persons they have never met. I can honestly say I have promised to pray for myLot friends and I have always done so, Always. I don't drink or eat anything while I pray and I never get down on my knees to pray for anyone because I am totally unable to get on my knees anymore but the lord knows and understands my health problems. I have felt the power of prayer lately and if I say I'll pray for you I really will. I don't go to church and I'm really not the most religious person you've ever met but I do believe in God and I believe in prayer. Thank You and Take Care.

Oh, it is not the request for or the promise of a prayer (on the internet) that does not set well for me, but the supposed praying on it. I know I am not wording this well. Say instead of the above being a comment, it began with "dear Heavenly Father or the like, then described the condition or predicament, maybe some words of praise, and ended with Amen. the "prayer" being the post. or several people would add a single intention or praise to the continuing list.... or a line of a prayer to which everyone has "Amen" on the ready to be submitted.

Modestah, I saw that you said below that you maybe you didn't word this well. I think you worded it very well! I totally understand what you mean and I struggled with that for a long time myself! But then I came to the conclusion that God doesn't mind at all! As a matter of fact I believe he is quite in favor of it as long as we don't trade it in for our intimate privte times of prayer with him. Just like you mentioned above! I think God would not appreciate any kind of prayer if it were done the same format day in and day out like a ritual. I think variety is the spice of life and God appreciates it all and yet also loves the times when we do come into that private humbling time to seek him to worship and to grow and the knowledge and wisdom of him, to lift our own selfs up to the Lord to be built up in HIM and to pray for others. Though I believe we should come to the Lord in that way at least once a day I think if anything becomes a formula than that is just as displeasing to God or discouraging to him and thinking we only have to pray as a way of having conversation through our friends. I guess everything in balance and mostly evverything with the right heart attitude is more important then it all! Okay now I am the one not explaining myself well.

Cyber Prayer is a new concept to me. I'm thinking I'd prefer the Witches Coven where 13,( mostly fair young maidens) strip off their clothes and dance around a nice hot fire at midnight to raise the Energy. Now thats my idea of a Prayer! I'm not sure about the beverages served, but I'm willing to play that by ear......I can't feel any discomfort with the witches at all. Sounds so much more exciting that sitting on a computer chair completely dressed!

Wow, online religion? I guess it takes all kinds =). I can't judge it really, never had heard of it till now but if it speaks to somebody and is of use to somebody, how could it be bad? It sounds like there is a whole community, like here.
