I am thinking about starting a home day care business, and I was wondering if anyone does it. What are some of the positives or the negatives of having one? My daughter owns the home and does not stay in the house. I figure it can help her pay the mortgage and since I am unemployed I thought it would be good idea. We also thought about having a family friend stay up stairs rent free and she can help with some of the day care responsibilities. We probably can pay her a stipend.

My mother used to own a home nursery school in our basement, which she converted into a big play room. Nursery school is different from daycare because it follows a curriculum. Mom's was as follows.
Circle time
Play time
Art
play
snack
play
circle
home
All over the period of 2.5 hours. This was like a pre-kindergarten, as opposed to a babysitting service.

I ran a state daycare for several years. The difference between a regular daycare and a state daycare is that in a state daycare the daycare is paid for by family services and is part of putting parents to work that are on welfare. I regular daycare is one that the parents pay for the daycare.
As for pro's and con's, the pro's are that you get to be home to take care of things there, you don't have to punch a clock everyday, you are your own boss and once you get the hang of it, it can be fun.
The con's are you constantly have kids in your home, sometimes they bring head lice or chicken pox, the hours vary according to the parents work schedule, you have to stay on top of things to avoid being overwhelmed and it can burn you out on kids. Hope this helps.
