Do you think that is how doctors are?

Im a Doctor and I love watching House. But there has always been a question lingering in the back of my head about this show: To Non-physicians who watch house...Do you think or believe that doctors are capable of doing the NASTY and OUTRAGEOUS things that House does? Please support your answers with expamles or personal experience stories.

Gosh! How I wish doctors would be more like them.. lol.. I have some hospital background, and I think House and his crew are doing a better job than the doctors here at my place. For one, they have the luxury of doing all the labs and tests they can think of, hence being able to diagnose almost all diseases known to mankind. To compare it really, usual doctors just do the routine stuffs. Eg.: fever=infection=antibiotics. On the other hand, in House, they really do tests/cutures, etc.. Even go to the patient's houses to investigate..lol.. I guess it's just too good to be true, that's why it's only a TV show. =D

Yeah, but real doctors can't legally go into people's houses, can they? Also, the tests they do are often dangerous to the patient. They just add all this junk for the drama. Not to mention, doing that many tests and having that many come up negative must be a real drain on that hospital's finances.

No, I know that this is just a show and that generally doctors are not like this. If they were I'd hope they'd be fired ;)

Granted House is not your typical loving understanding doctor that I normally run into butto be honest i wouldent be surprised if there were a few out there that acted just like him.

I have never met a doctor quite like House, although I have come across one or two that have been just about as stubborn and had some attitudes that made me think of him. I do enjoy watching the show though.

I guess there could be doctors out there that act the way House does, but I've never met one like that before. However, I wish that more doctors were as smart as him because most of the time when I'm sick, the doctors have no idea what is wrong with me and I have to figure it out for myself. Then when I do figure it out and make myself better, the doctor won't believe that my natural remedies worked and say I must've gotten better on my own.

I'm a nurse and I dont think there are docs exactly the same as House but..... I have worked with some extremely arrogant doctors. Granted that dont act so arrogant with the patients but behind the scenes with their support staff they are quite the opposite. Of course this is not every doctor as I've worked with some excellent docs that I've learned much from.

Agreed, I have seen and worked with some Doctors who probably should have their licences revoked due to the amount of abuse they put their staff through and their outrageous abuse of power. I have also met people who become addicted to narcotics but none have been allowed to practice their habbits as they immediatly lose their jobs when they are discovered. I understand the frustrations many people have noted when it comes to wrong diagnosis and such but unfortunately doctors are no super people and some times they just do not know.

I'm not a Dr; I am a nurse however (since 1969) My daughter is also a Dr. I've never seen anybody like House in the real world. I have worked for a lot of arrogant ones though, mostly with staff. Even though the House stories are pure fiction, for some reason I find it an entertaining show, more like a medical mystery, in a way, in which the audience is given subtle clues (yet the only one who can figure out the clues and fit them together is House) The story line with him being addicted, I think in real life they'd have their license pulled so fast it'd make their head spin.

I have relatives who are doctors and ikinow that they are not capable of doing the nasty things that House does. But I do hope that there would be a lot of great doctors like him to be able to diagnose the disease correctly.

It is just a show, but sometimes you do wonder what a Dr. is really thinking when you are telling them a problem you, or in my case, my daughter has. Thank goodness I haven't encountered any Dr.'s like House or even remotely close, but many of my daughter's doctors have spoken to me in a very condescending manner. My 11 year old daughter was just diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in Feb. of this year. Some of the questions I do realize are necessary to repeat again and again, but give the patient and parents the benefit of the doubt sometimes. Like when I had to call the Dr. to say that my daughter was still not improving after 3 different meds and 2 doses of Remicade. I was told that since it was so close to summer, she would feel just fine once school was out and she could relax. Guess what? School ending did nothing for her symptoms and her health. I also was told when I expressed a question about why she is still in level 5 pain daily that there are many reasons for an 11 yr old to be in pain other than the Crohn's. As I said earlier, I do realize these questions need to be asked, but after you get to know the patient and /or parent of a patient, can't they be more accepting of my take on her feelings being that I live with her and she lives with her pain daily? I sure didn't mean to bring down your profession at all. It is just that when you have a bad experience, it is hard to forget it.

I do enjoy watching House. He makes me laugh despite his nastiness. I don't think that all doctors are like House. It is just a tv show. I have a brother who is also a doctor and he normally treats his patients courteously. However, I do hear some horror stories about arrogant doctors who treat the staff and nurses badly.
