My cat frustrations

I have a cat, or more of a kitten who is 8 months old and we got him when he was about 2 months old. He is lovely cat with such a good nature. He's not one though for hugs and petting and tends to let more of his tom characterists shine out. We love him though and he doesn't cause much trouble. He is the only cat we have and is the first. He is predominately an indoor cat even although we let him a few times a day to have a stroll along our long stretch of balcony supervised. He uses his litter tray and has not once had any sort of accident. He eats well but sometimes goes on a wee hunger strike but it doesn't last long as he does like his grub. When he was younger he had a sore eye cos his sister had scratched it and even although his breeder took him to the vet and stuff it still ended up forming an absess a few weeks after we got him and it cleared up fine though after a few vet trips and some eye drops. He got cat flu but I think the worst thing about it was having to get a thermometer up his bum a couple of times but after some antibiotics and all that he was fine and the vet was more than happy with his health. WE have got him all thr required jabs and he has got his pet insurance and got his little chip installed. He is a funny cat, sometimes to cuddly and other times won't look at us but that I suppose is the independance of a cat. We never leave him for more than a couple of hours on his own and he has all the toys, scratching posts and hidey holes he could dream of. Now I be tyou are wondering where my frustrations are with him cos I love him to bits. ***** He cried for hours on end at times and nothing we can do stops him. he isn't in any pain as we cans ee, he is perfectly mobile, perfectly healthy but it is as though the wee soul has found his voice and just wants to keep on using it. This insistant crying has obviously resulted in him being spoiled as we do all we can do please him and I am wondering if anyone with more experience than me knows what it can be. When he is like this he is not relaxed and wonders from room to room as though he is sad or lonely. We do think of getting him another wee friend to play with but that causes us worries of how they will get on. Does anyone know why my little Leo cries for hours on end sometimes? We play with him, feed him, chase him, cuddle him (when he wants) but somehow I jsut feel like i am missing giving him stuff. Please help!

Hi Claire, - well my first and obvious question is "has little Leo been neutered?" If not, then I would hazard a guess that he is going into puberty (about 6-8 months in male cats), and calling for a mate. Best to get him checked out with the Vet for any other cause, but if he's healthy in other ways, then chances are he's just wanting a girlfriend, and because he doesn't go out, he can't find one:-(( If you're keeping him as an indoor cat, perhaps best to get him "done" for his own health and peace of mind. Ashe gets bigger, if he hasn't ben castrated, he may trn nasty in his - er - frustration! He may benefit from a "friend" too. At 8 months, he is certainly not too old to accept another cat in the house, but best a slightly younger male who is no threat to his masculinity, or a female who has already been spayed. Good luck!

Well he has had his bits done. When he was four months or so we got it done cos he was a little bit hyper and the vet said it would only get worse if he reached puberty cos he would "want it" so on vets recommendation he got it and then were know complications at all.

The first thing that I can think of to ask is did you have someone staying with you who is not there now? If so he may be looking or them. I have a cat that goes in the other room and yells untill I call for him to come to me or go to see what he wants. If I ask him to show me what he wants he will go to whatever it is and sit meowing at me. As for getting another cat they may hiss and spit at each other at first and maybe fight a little but they will soon become friends if you leave them alone.
