Have you read the news lately? A Korean firm is planning, actually, starting the construction already of a Spa near or almost at the crater of the Taal Lake at Tagaytay. A brief background. Tagaytay, which is just 70km south of Manila, perches a 600-meter high overlooking Taal Volcano, and because of its cool climate - on some days it even gets foggy - is a popular weekend retreat from the heat nearby capital. Taal Volcano is one of the Active Volcanoes here in the Philippines, and there are occasional rumblings that force the authorities to issue evacuation warnings to the local inhabitants. The volcano last erupted in 1965 without causing much damage, but when it blew its top in 1974, thousands died and the town of Taal was destroyed and had to moved to a new location on safer ground. Now, back at the Spa news.. Based on the recent news, A Korean company is set to build a spa resort on Taal Volcano and as of this time, it has managed to enter into an agreement with the local authorities and at DENR. In spite of warnings from the Philvocs that the whole island is in fact considered a danger zone. Alert levels has been raised since 2005. The Philvocs Director confirmed that the agency has been objecting to the construction. But it seems that the Korean company still want to build the spa along the pathway that leads up to the main wall of the volcano's crater. A lot have died when it erupted and are they trying to ignore it or they really dont know that Taal Volcano is one of the most active and dangerous volcano in the world? Do they really want to build a spa there? The hotsprings are nice, but would you risk your life to have a spa near an active crater that you wouldnt know when will it explode??? Yeah that news has been going on around the news for quite sometime now and I think it's better to stop this as I have seen the sight it really is on top of the lid of the volcano. It is indeed very dangerous and should not be allowed to continue on. I am just wondering how they were able to buy that piece of land since this is a government land and is alsoa protected zone it should never be sold to anyone especially to foreigners. I think there are some politicians behind this mysterious sale of public land.

I think so too. I just hope that the Korean realized the risk factor here. Not just investing and earnings lot of cash but consider also the welfare of people.

i've seen this on the news. i can't understand how it got a permit from denr and how the korean firm was able to buy 6 hectares of land in taal. i can understand if it was land located somewhere else. but on the volcano island?! how's that?! if it's all legal and the building of the spa pushes through to completion, i personally wouldn't want to go there (if, let's say, i can even afford it). there are other spa resorts/places around where i can't add any more risks to my life.

as we say "only in the philippines" imagine a place called and regarded a "national park" and then suddenly, a private individual, or should we more say, a foreign individual and now it becomes a private property. :-)

here's a latest on this. the DENR suspended the clearance they give to Jung Ang corporation. Why do they have to wait for the public to react before they think whether their action is right or not. If the public didnt resist they will just let the firm set the spa in the lake. tsk.. tsk..
