Guess what I found in our appetizer?

My husband and I dined last weekend at a seafood restaurant in our area that we go to quite often. He was starving so I suggested that we order an appetizer. He decided that he was in the mood for raw oysters. I said fine. It's not my favorite but I told him I would eat one or two. Our appetizer arrived (1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell) and he dug in. I ate one and then decided to go ahead and have another. As I was chewing, I hit something solid. I pulled out a little black pearl! I told him I just found a pearl in my oyster and he said...no way. That's grit. I said nope, look! He had to agree when he saw the size that it wasn't grit! I think this is only like the second time I've eaten raw oysters and to find a pearl in one is rather odd. Looks like I beat the odds! Now I have to decide what to do with my little black seed pearl! I'm keeping it that is for sure!

Wow, I bet that they did put that little black pearl on your bill. Congratulations on finding that pearl. I hope it didn't hurt your teeth or mess them up. As far as what to do with that pearl, maybe you could have it put on a ring, or make it a pendat for a necklace. With your luck with raw oysters, maybe you should eat them more often. LOL.

Actually when I felt something hard I quit biting so no harm done! I think I will save it for the first born female grandchild and have a necklace made with the pearl in the center. That way she can keep it and even have it put on a better/longer chain when she gets older. I won't complain when hubby wants raw oysters, that is for sure!

Oh it would make a cute necklace that is for sure. I bet you could take it to have it mounted. That's what I would do with it and I don't think I could ever take it off either. It has to be good luck after that, LOL.

Phew! When I first read the title I thought OMG not something creepy crawly found in the starter, then I read on and thought thank god for that! Well done on your find, good job you didn't bite into it or swallow it. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your meal!

That really is against the odds. My dad always goes against the odds too, but all he gets is the occasional cherry pit or the bone in the boneless chicken.

I would too. You are lucky to get the good surprises. We always laugh at my dad because he always ends up with whatever seeds, bones, or anything like that in his food, but it has never been anything good.

That's pretty interesting? I've never had raw oysters and probably never will. That's one of those things that does not even beging to look appetizing to me. I kind of gag at the thought of eating them. LOL I would keep the black pearl too. Should be a nice souvenier for you. :)

Raw oysters are interesting. You either love them or hate them. I'm odd...I don't love them and I don't hate them. I just think they are ok. I would never order them for just myself! Funny, we watched a teenager eat them for the first time several months ago. Just watching her expression was a blast!

Hey there Terry. I prefer oysters fried but I'm pretty open to trying new things. I can't eat raw ones plain but can manage to get them down with a good cocktail sauce :) Yummm, lobster is so good! It's a favorite here too!

It's really not that big. It is the size of a seed pearl you would find on a wedding dress. So really not worth more than sentimental value.

I doubt it is worth more than a few dollars since it is small. It was fun finding it though!

That is so cool1 I wish I could find one. I love oysters. A friend of mine also found a black pearl in one of hers a while back. What will you do with it? I would get it placed onto a ring! Pearl is my birthstone and I love them. Simply beautiful!

Yeah, I thought it was cool too! It's pretty small for an adult ring. I was thinking of saving it for my first granddaughter! That may be a few years away though!

That is so cool!! Good fo you. I would take it to a trusted jeweler and see what she/he says. Maybe that is something you could get appraised. Maybe Im over-doing it, because I honestly dont know the worth of a black pearl...I know Id check it out. Either way, its a really cool story. Sounds fun!

I would definitely go get this appraised, though I can't help but think it is not a real pearl. According to wikipedia they are VERY rare and hard to find.

It is definitely real. A real pearl is very hard to crush. A jeweler will tell you that is one of the best ways to verify if a pearl is real or not. If it were of a quality size, I would have it appraised but since it is a tiny seed pearl, there is not much you can do with it anyway.

WOW. This is called luck. Yes, you are very lucky that you find a pearl. I think you should make a cute ring with that. I am wondering how you managed to get out of that restaurant. :) Have a nice day.

That's really cool that you found a pearl. You should make a pendant or a charm out of it. I've never had that happen to me, but then again I don't eat oysters... but enjoy your pearl!

Isn't that neat....my Mother passed in 1996, but I still have her little medicine bottle she kept in her purse, with 7 little black and white pearls she found in raw oysters. Needless to say, she ate raw oysters a LOT!!!

Hey Lisa, I don't think it really has any great value since it is small. It looks like a med. size seed pearl. I'm keeping it though!

You lucky girl, I am glad you did not swallow it. LOL I would love to have a black pearl. Do you know if a black pearl is rarer than a white pearl? I think they are but am not sure. I think you are luck girl.

Hi there:) Wow! kareng! you ate it second time and you found a pearl! could it be the case that a grit changed itself into a pearl in your mouth!!? I would think it as a valid possibility:)) well, It's good to keep it, since it will remind you not to stop your husband making an order for oyster:)) it may also be used in some necklace or? congratulations kareng!:)))

wow, that is odd. We eat them all the time and have never found any type of pearl what so ever. If it is big enough you could make a necklace or even a rimg out of it. I think either of them would be pretty and you have a great story to go along with it.
