What is the difference between a rapper and a lyricist?

I feel that the new generation of Hip Hop has only produced a bunch of "Performers." Rap is a performance, but lyric making is a skill that few possess. There are too many peeps in it for the money and not the art. What is the key difference between a Rapper and a Lyricist? There are few lyricists left in the game . I have a few that I can name off the top of my head...Common, Rakim, Jay-Z, Nas, Mos Def, Outkast, Kanye West, Ghostface, Raekwon, GZA. Any more??
