Phobias

Does anyone here have any phobias that you think are kinda strange or silly but you can't help it? I have a fear of oceans because I'm scared of sharks, eels, and whales. Stupid I know. I don't even know why I'm scared of sea creatures, especially whales. I have dreams about them a lot...maybe that's why. I also hate the thought of bugs crawling on me at night. You know how you get that creepy feeling at night sometimes, like something is crawling on you? Yuck. What are your phobias or hang-ups?

My biggest phobia is crowds. If I go to some public event and it is jam packed with people, I stay on the outskirts where the people density is at a comfortable level. Similarly I don't like sitting in the front seat at a live concert. Movie theatres are OK, though I prefer a ways back, depending on the size of the screen, but that's a preference, not a phobia. Being the center of attention, as in being made to give a speech or something like that have been known to give me panic attacks. Flying is another one. I try to get an aisle seat so I won't be tempted to look out the window. But if I do get a window seat for some strange reason, I still look out. One time I saw another plane going below us at right angles to our direction. Know how slow they look from the ground when they are high up in the air? I know for a fact they are not through experience. Even worse are those propeller ones, where you can't stand straight up or walk normally to your seat, which is not facing straight ahead, but along the sides, and a couple behind the cockpit facing the tail. You are guaranteed a window seat, and memories of how Buddy Holly and Richard Valens take over my consciousness. But still I manage, and so far survived.

I'm scared of the ocean but I still like to go and swim...cautiously though. I've never been on a plane but I think it would probably bother me at first. I do think of Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. Didn't the Big Bopper die in a plane crash too?

Yes, he was on the same plane. I recall reading a story about a company who lost all their CEOs in a plane crash, and it because company policy never to have all of them on the same flight. A movie was released this year about a college who lost its entire football team. I know people quote statistics that air travel is safer than by land, but I suppose it is the speed and the height that are intimidating, particularly with an overactive imagination of what can go wrong.

I'm scared of teletubbies. Terrified. I was on a queue in a bank once and there was this kid in front of me who had a teletubby backpack. I was breaking out in cold sweat and my knees were shaking badly, but I needed to pay something so I couldn't leave my place. It was a terrible experience.

I think mine are fairly normal, but I am really afraid of spiders, heights, and falling. When I was younger I used to love going on trips b/c of the planes, now I hate it! I have to take an attivan before going on a plane it is that bad:( I think it all started when I went to Europe and there was a really bad storm and the plane was dropping big time and alot. The lights even went out, and it was really scary. Ever since then I've been petrified of planes and that falling feeling you get in your stomache when you fall.

I'm the same way about roller coasters. I never really had a problem until 7th grade. I was on a ride with a friend and the thing across my lap was loose. Every time we went upside down, I felt it go loose and I remember holding on for dear life. It was terrible. Now, you can't get me on one unless I know it's pretty tame. No more upside down for me.:)

In college i have phobias of taking exams! That seems strange and silly but it does happen to me and I can't help it. It is also pretty dumb. I also hate cloud to ground lightning. Other phobias that I might have include asking my parents or telling them something wrong because if I do that, they may flip out on me and they will be very uspet. In other words, sometimes I have phobias that i can't tell anyone anything!

I've heard of test phobias. Lightening kinda freaks me out too. My dad has a metal rod in his back, and he can't go out in lightening storms.

Bugs - but there is nothing strange or silly about it! Bugs are nasty, ugly, sneaky, dirty little things and I hate them!

I used to fear darkness until some 12 yrs ago and I am 32!LOL but seriously,it took a lot of self training to get out of that feeling that a lion is going to pounce upon me from the darkness.I started getting this phobia as a result of severe debilitating illness as a child. Now I don't fear darknes as such but I discovered as an adult that I fear congested spaces.I discovered this when I was in the US,visiting the Luray Caverns in Virginia.I felt really suffocated at some points in the cavers, strikingly beautiful though it was.

Wow...thanks for the comment. I didn't realize fears could be triggered by illness. Congested spaces are difficult for me too...I know how you feel. I hate swimming underwater because of the feeling of not being able to breathe and I don't like for anything to cover my face. I have a friend that can't go into caverns because of some of the parts of the cave.

I know how you feel. I don't care much for heights either. I don't like roller coasters for the fear of being upside down and feeling like you could fall out.

i do not find my phobias as very strange. i have a fear of heights, the dark and ghosts. ever since i have watched the exorcist when i was seven i do not want to be in the dark and for the fact that i might see ghosts. when i am at high structures my knees shake and my sweat turns cold.
