So...I cooked using habenero's for the first time today. I've heard these things can really burn your skin. So I was careful when I cut them and I washed my hands thoroughly afterward. But everytime I touch my skin it starts to burn! I washed my hands a few more times and a couple hours later I scrathed my eye. Now my eye is burning! Aggh! How do I get whatever habenero stuff off my hands so it doesn't burn anymore??

Hehehehe. I know this is a very old and 'resolved' discussion, but I couldn't let it pass. I had read that hot peppers stepped up your metabolism so I was putting jalepenos in my salad everyday. Soon I got so used to the jalepenos that they didn't even seem hot anymore. So I switched to Haberneros... the hottest of the hot peppers! I was a plant lady and drove around all day watering plants in offices etc., and had my salad in a container with the habernero and the dressing in separate containers. I parked under a tree and cut the pepper up into my salad and ate it. Then I drove off and while waiting at a red light I blew my severely running nose, poking the tissue up into my nose with my fingers. OH MY GOD!!! There just happened to be a paramedic van driving down the street going the other direction and I almost drove over the median to chase them down... I thought maybe I was going to die! I've discovered that the best way to avoid that is to use rubber gloves when preparing them, and even then it's wise to keep your fingers away from eyes, nose, and well, private parts too, till at least the next day!

Oh my goodness! That's another sensitive area to have burned by habernero peppers! I 've heard they have found an even hotter pepper now. Don't know if I could handle that one!!

oh dear, I feel your pain. I did that once (habenero sauce) and my eye ended up swelling shut - it was HUGE! and looked really distorted like a cartoon. to get it off your hands, hmmm... maybe vinegar rinse will neutralize the pepper's acid.

This morning at 8:00 am I decided to stirfry some hot peppers that my neighbor grew in his yard. After everything was diced and sliced I rubbed my eye. Well, @@####$$$$ was what came out of my mouth . My left eye was burning, I could not see!! I immediately tried to flush out my eye, but it wasn't working. I filled a large tupperware bowl with cold water and submerged practically the whole left side of my face in the bowl for about 2-3 minutes. Then I put a baggie with ice on it for about 2 min. The real relief came when I went in th e shower and let cool water beat on it as I opened and closed it for about 10min.The next time I handle hot peppers...I will wear latex gloves!!
