Why do People Automatically Assume that Scientists are Atheists?

I have only know one Atheist in my life and he was a paramedic. Figure that one out. But throughout teaching and interacting with people I have found a theme over and over again. A lot of people assume that biologists and other scientists are Atheists. I just wonder why that is? I have know scientists that were almost every religion, Christian, I am Wiccan, Buddhist, Muslim, neo-nordic. So why does the general population believe we, scientists, are without faith?

I think it is because they are afraid that facts and faith can't go together. They fear that if someone took a close look at facts that their religion (which they accept on faith) would be proven invalid/false. They say they have faith; but they really have doubt and are trying to hide from that doubt themselves. They don't realize that a scientist is looking for the PROOF of his own faith.

No; but, you do have a "hypothesis" and then seek proof to either prove or disprove it. Religion is the hypothesis and many scientists seek the proof through scientific method. But, a lot of non-scientific people ASSUME that scientists do not believe in religion because they personally have to accept the hypothesis (religion) on blind faith and they are afraid that science would prove them wrong.

you don't create a theory then build evidence on it..

i have never met a scientist (with a real degree, not kent hovind haha) who believes in the traditional god. either they had their own version of god, were pantheists or did not believe in god. 70% i think are secular.

My husband is six months away from a PhD in genetics and is a Christian. I have a Masters degree in Biology and while I am not Christian, I believe in a God and Goddess as it so happens, I am Wiccan. I have met Kent Hovind and he is quite a trip. He debated with my Masters professor back when I was getting my degree.

genetics revolves around evolution... evolution is not christian... and if i may ask.. what school could this be?

Because they see so many scientists trying to prove evolution correct and creationism wrong, and everything else that is supposed to be god given wrong. So, automatically, scientists don't believe in god because they're trying to prove him wrong. Don't see what the big deal is myself. I don't see why science can't stand alongside faith, but people refuse to believe it can.

But I don't see why one can't accept evolution as theory and still believe in faith and religion. Most evolutionists don't really care how it all got started. Creationism and Evolution don't deal with the same issues. Creationism is how is got started. Evolution is the changes that happen after. So why couldn't God or the Goddess have put these scientific principles we are discovering in motion?

Well, Aurone, I think it's because a lot of scientists in the past have stated that they were atheists. I don't believe it is so true in modern times though. We live in a world where mostly everybody believes in some higher power.

I agree. Most everyone I know believes in some sort of higher power.

Scientist do not generally believe in God, or religion for that matter because of what they have learned through intense studying. The basis of their studies tells them to make a hypothesis, and carry out an experiment on something when you have a question about the outcome. But God and religion and both untestable. There is not way you can get in the lab and put some chemicals in a beaker and see whether or not God is real. Cheers!

Scientists have scientific brains and in science, God or religion does not exist. Scientists prove things for a living so without proof most of them cannot believe in something higher than themselves. And as far as your paramedic friend.. that really doesn't shock me either. I've found that a lot of doctor's don't believe in God either. Doctor's see that people's lives are in their hands. They die because something the doctor does or does not do, not because of God. So I can see a paramedic being the same way.

I guess that makes sense about the paramedic. There are more to scientists than people seem to see, a lot of them are artistic, in fact a member of my masters committee is one of the top bronze artists in the US. A lot of them also have faith in some kind of higher power.

Hello Aurone! I don't exactly know why people automatically assume that. I think that for most part, people assume that because many they see science and religion as mutually exclusive of each other, and I don't know why so either. I am doing doctorate in engineering and I have very well globally recognized instructors here in the field of engineering. I am a strong believer as are many others here. Those who do not believe in GOD or any deity aren't Atheists either for most part, they are simply agnostics some even agnostic theists. The people who know the difference of Atheism and Agnosticism can see that they are not the same thing. I was an agnostic myself almost throughout my teenage. It's science and finally (mainly) engineering which again brought me to theism. So, it's natural for me to get surprised when people would assume that scientists are atheists or that they can't be both scientist and theist at a given time.

I think that overall people do not assume that scientists are atheists. Even though sciencists are logical and look at facts, there is a great deal of facts behind every religion. Regardless of race, culture or even location, virtually every society has some form of a higher power that is worshipped in some way or another. The entire world cannot be wrong about religion and spirtuality. In fact, scientists are notorious for proving the Bible. Look at the hunt for Noah's Ark as one prime example. Not only that but Scientists proved the eco-system that was present in the Ark made no problem with all the output of the animals that were inside the Ark during that whole time. I think that only a handful of ignorant people automatically make the assumption that scientists are Atheist.
