After years of contemplating drawing comics,which they say must be inked in after pencilling,and which I did not like doing,I have decided to draw only in pencil. Pencil is not the basic art material used only for preliminary drawings for inks and paints as many people think, but is a major material in its own right. I am going to rather promote pencil in comic drawing bringing it into its own.After all in which other medium can one render a subject so photographically real on one hand and also make fantastic cartoons and caricatures on the other, using only one instrument.There is one thing that I dont agree on and that is, when drawing in pencil,use only one grade per drawing.Dont use 2b,3b,F,HB. in one drawing.Using just one grade,of pencil in a drawing shows your mastery of your drawing tool.My preferred grade of pencil is HB.,hard black,this pencil has everything in it.I like it when someone asks "What sort of pencils did you use for this drawing?"When I reply: "HB. they ask again "What?...only one pencil?....is'nt HB. used by school kids for writing? "Yes and for drawing too." "Then surely you can make a lot of money if you use pencil and make it look so good." Yes indeed folks! you sure can, but please,before you start, make certain that you buy the best brand that you can find.My personal favorite is "Staedtler", you will get a good strong lead that is rich and pure.Another good brand is "Faber Castell." With these top brands you get good value for money No, no,I am not advertising the wares of these companies,I am simply showing you what you can do with the lowly pencil.Of course using a good brand.
