Why do people cry when someone he/she loves die?

Up to this age I cannot understand why do people cry when someone close to his/her hearts die? The things I cannot understand base on my understanding the prerequisite in entering heaven is to die first. So why do they cry?

We cry for what we have lost, and for what might have been.

I think it is the thought of not having that someone near when you want them make a difference. You'll get to miss them alot and can't go where they are. That is the heart breaking part I think.
