Are You a Pill Popper?

Open Bottle of Pills - This bottle of pills is open in anticipation of being taken to relieve some type of symptoms...

Hold on before you jump to conclusions.... I want to know when you feel a headache or other pain coming on...do you reach for a bottle of pills....or do you wait until the pain is so terrible that you are forced to take something or do you just refuse to take something and suffer through it???? I am the type who takes something when I feel it coming on...I have suffered from migraines all of my life...that plus the 10 years that I spend as a nurse has taught me to take it early because preventing it from getting worse is better than trying to reduce the pain level once it is unbearable... So what type of person are you??? Are you a pill popper like me or somehwere in between???

I too have suffered with migraines for as long as I can remember but I do not take meds as soon as I feel one coming on. I have a headache on a daily basis it is just the severity that changes. I will first of all think of the last time I have eaten and what I had to drink(coffee, chocolate etc..) If it is probably caused by food or drink I will wait it out because the pills won't do anything for it. If that isn't the problem then I will take some pills. If it doesn't go away I will take a couple more and if that doesn't work I tell my husband to get the car because I gotta go to the hospital. This doesn't happen very often. :)

I know eexactly what you are talking about...you just described a day in my life....think we are related...just kidding of course.... Do you get an aura before the migraine hits hard??? I usually do....often my prescription migraine meds and sleep in a dark cool quiet room is all that will help without a trip to the hospital.... If I am caught away from the house...I usually have about 15 minutes....LOL

A few times in my life, they have lasted for 2-3 days straight...it is so hard to put your whole life on hold because you can hear the carpet grow...candle light feel like standing on the sun...food looks/tastes/smells like rotting garbage....Migraines are very hard to explain to someone who has never had one.... The bad thing is that my 7 yr. old granddaughter get s them too just like I did when I was a child...

Oh ya! I have sometimes waken up with it. That is really annoying and hard to handle because it is usually bad enough that the pills don't help. You know we might just be related I have lots of relatives all over the place. LOL :)

when i feel headache or i feel pain,i take biogesic quick. because i do not want it to become unbearable before taking any medicine. but the most and important for me is to prevent rather than cure it.

Yes, my new friend...attempting to gain control over the pain before it becomes unbearable is what they taught us when I was going to nursing school...it takes more medicine to manage pain that is already out of control.... Thanks so much for sharing with me...

Hello tinam. I used to struggle with migraines too. It always occurred during my monthly visitor. I will immediately take pain reliever before it got worsen. I didn't like to take any chances as I was not a happy person when migraines hit me to the max. Early this year, my doctor suggested I took a blood test and discovered that I had a very low red blood count. My doctor prescribed some supplements for me and since then, I didn't experience any migraines again.

A bunny supplement will make your ears grow longer like mine, LOL. I took iron and burdock root. Iron, as you very well know, is good for the production of red blood count. Burdock root is a very safe herbal supplement for detoxification and purification of our blood. I tell you, this one really helps me with my migraines tremendously. You can ask your doctor about it.

I think all kinds of pills to ease pain, although they are only meant to bring relief, have side effects whether near term or long term. So I usually try not to pop in pills unless it is absolutely necessary. Frankly I hardly take any pills in a year, even the vitamin pills that many people take for supplementing their health. And I have been staying healthy for long periods of time without all these pills. But if I do get the occasional headache, I will use ointment on my forehead instead of pills. This is usually effective to relieve the pain after some rest or sleep. The only other pill I take once a while, usually for slight fever, is paracetamol or panadol as the pill is called here.

If i get a headache or something that is uncomfortable, i will take something.Being pregnant with our second child I try my best not to take anything & i find panadol doesn't work half the time for my "pregnancy headaches" I will do my best to hold out as long as i can, but having a toddler makes that alot harder, but if hubby is home, he will take our son so i can go lay down for a while to sleep it off.

I may get a migraine once a month but not usually more than that. My doctor has offered me prescription meds to deal with it but I refused them. I find with Advil Migraine Gel Caps and sleep, I get through them fine. I don't really want another script on my list, since I already take a couple of blood pressure meds. However, for a non-migraine, regular headache, I usually don't take anything. I don't find OTC products work especially well for me personally so a headache has to be a real bear before I'll reach for a pill bottle. If I have to be somewhere, though, I will be more likely to take a couple of Tylenols or something so that I can be more human LOL

I agree with you 100% that, when you do have prescription meds, taking them IMMEDIATELY is the way to go... while I was waiting a painfully long time to get admission to hospital for gall bladder surgery, the doctor gave me painkillers to deal with the ongoing attacks. He told me to take them the moment I felt a twinge of pain because, otherwise, I was going to really suffer and the pills wouldn't help. On a few occasions, I nipped out to the store for a few things and, sure enough, an attack started and there I was without the meds. I left my cart in the middle of the aisle a couple of times and went straight home! I'm very lucky to have not been hospitalized with migraines... and I can't imagine how awful your pain must be. I'm glad, though, that you've found a treatment that helps you deal! I think there's a tendency to "name" any bad headache as a "migraine".. but for those who DO get them, there's no denying that's what it is! YUCK! Good health and pain-free days to you! ;)

I do occasionally take OTC meds for minor pains but I also find that I attempt to relieve them with some stretching or food first....then relent and take something... As I have suffered with migraines forever it seems...ending up at the hospital too many times to count...I must take the prescriptions immediately... I am glad that you seem to have found and alternative to this slavery to a medication bottle...LOL Thanks for sharing your feelings with me....

I definitely procrastinate when it comes to taking pills. I think I was about 15 when I learned to take them, but usually only the small ones. Nowadays, I can take pretty much anything, but I think it's just the step of doing so that I tend to blow off. I actually took one today, which surprised people, but that was due to the skull-splitting headache I had earlier lol. Yeah, I have to be pretty out of it to even muster up the motivation to take one. My mother, on the other hand, is the complete opposite.

I try and wait as long as I possibly can before I reach for anything. I don't like taking too much stuff if I really can help it. But if I can tell it's just going to get worse and pretty unbearable, I'll take something so it doesn't get any worse.

I don't like getting headaches and usually when I do, it's because I haven't had enough sleep. I usually sleep it off and mostly it works. If it hasn't then I pop a pill and eventually it goes away. I had hurt my lower back late last year (herniated disc) and boy did I pop a lot of pain killer pills then, I think too much at times but they did work for short periods of time.

Yup, if I had attended to the pain earlier it would not have gotten worse. I ignored it and just thought it was because I was overweight and with all the moving we did to get here, that just made it even worse. :)

That is easy to do...we often think that we can "handle" things on our own and sometimes we just can not.... I have also caught myself taking a pain medication and then continue whatever it is that I was doing...the pain meds seemed to mask the further damage that I virtually caused...like with my lower back...I took a couple of Tylenol #3..which helped the pain then continued to help my daughter move...I thought the pain was gone..until the meds wore off and I found that I had actually made it worse...

Oh, Maddysmommy, a herniated disc is extremely painful...I can understand the necessity for pain killers then....but controlling the pain before it become excruciating is the key with stuff like that..otherwise you have to increase the dosage to obtain the same amount of pain relief.... I also try to sleep off some headaches...with my migraines I get a sort of aura first...this usually give me about 15 minutes until it is debilitating...so I run to the medicine cabinet for them...LOL Thanks, my friend....

Hi tinamwhite! Bless Your heart! It has got to be horrible having migraines. I have to admit I usually wait until it gets bad before I take anything for a headache or any type of pain. I have always been that way because I guess I have always been afraid I'll get to where I think I have to have it. But you are definitely right, it is better to go ahead and take it once you feel the pain starting. Maybe one day I'll get better at that. :)

Having suffered from migraines all of my life, I have experienced excruciating pain with it....I once had a ER doctor tell me in a very rude manner that he could remove my head if that would help...to which I replied that if it would help..go ahead.... I do not try to take medicine in excess but have found out that a pound of prevention is worth an ounce of cure...lol Thanks for sharing with me, my friend....

Well put it this way my friend if you were to physically pick me up shake me I would rattle (mind you I'm 15 stone so just think hypothetically LOL!) I have to take thyroxine (2 tabs) every morning, I take my antihystamines for hayfever, I take a vitamin pill and I also take a valerian sleeping pill before bed and sometimes nurofen for headaches!

Yes, my dearest Wolfie, I know that you need to take certain medications...I know that you have attempted to find a more natural remedy for some of the illnesses that afflict you...and I commend your attempts...medication is just a necessary evil for some of us that we must have to function everyday and I see NO shame in that!!! Like you, I do not wait most times...I take something to remedy the situation or it might get worse.... Neuofen must be the equivalent of ibuprofen here in the US...beware of taking it on an empty stomach as it can really upset your tummy... Thanks, my friend....take care...talk soon...xoxo

I wouldn't label myself as a pill popper. I try to use alternatives rather then take pills. If I feel a headache coming on I will drink a couple of cups of coffee. I learned when I was younger that for whatever reason this seems to eliminate headaches for me. If the coffee doesn't work then I will take a couple of pills. I always try to find another way to deal with things before I turn to pills.

I also do that and the reason that the coffee will sometimes help is that the caffeine caused the blood vessels to increase flow and thereby carrying fresh oxygenated blood to those areas...I also find that minor headaches can be caused for me by not eating and that food will help.... Migraines are a whole new ball game though...I must take my meds or go to the hospital... I like to attempt other alternatives first as well but I will not allow the pain to become excruciating because I know that makes it harder for the meds to gain control over the pain.... Thanks, my dear friend, for sharing your feelings with me..

Like you, I've also suffered from migraines. The worst thing you can do with a migraine is wait too long. I've found that when I did that, whatever I took didn't work. I have to take the pills immediately to get relief. Thankfully, as I get older, the migraines have subsided almost completely, but I don't hesitate to pop a couple of pills if I feel one coming on .

Yes, Wachit, Migraines are a whole different ball game....LOL If I fail to take my meds with a migraine quickly, I will often end up at the hospital which is worse...waiting for relief in that noisy surroundings is intolerable...
