What do you do when someone else's earphones are too loud?

Ever been on a bus pr plane or train and noticed that you can hear the music the person next to you or behind you - or sometimes even a few seats away is playing on their I-pod or other music player? They are supposed to be listening on head phones or earphones - now either they are deaf or their headphones don't work! What do you do? Try to ignore it? Ask them to turn it down? Move seats? I once nudged the person and said they must turn it down because it was interfering with my hearing aid (that was a lie but it worked). Sometimes I am afraid to ask because people can react quite aggressively. So what would you do?

I ask them to turn it down. Plain and simple. You use ear phone so as not to disturb other people with your music. Well, if it's too loud, you are disturbing me. I have no problems telling them to hush it.

Where i work its not so easy - its a bad area and they are not the sort of people you would want to ask

Well then yo have two choices at this point, ask them anyways or ignore it. It's amazing what you can get with a little honey, so just try and be nice about it.

Yes that happens quite often on the tube in London, I had a girl who came and plonked herself next to me when I was travelling home from a night out in London last night and she had her music on really loud, I looked at her and pointed to my ear and tapped it, she gave me a glare as if to say what's your problem? What I'd love to do but I haven't got the guts to do it is to go over to the person and with a pair of scissors snip the wire off their headphones! Now that would be neat! Trouble is in this day and age you don't know how people are going to react even if you are assertive and polite with them, you hear of so many horror stories of people pulling out a knife, it's just worth the risk.

That's exactly what I've been getting at. I don't think some people believe just how unpleasant some British people can be. They would rather stab you than turn their music down - and you are the one made to look unreasonable. thanks for replying Wolfie!

Good for you for telling someone to turn it down because of your (non-existent) hearing aid but what a shame you had to lie for fear of the person possibly declining your request or even becoming abusive. I find it quite annoying when people have very loud headphones, the whole of them having personal headphones on is so that they can hear their own music and not inflict in on everyone else, so why should we be scared to ask people to turn it down? Well I personally wouldn't say anything, so there you are, I'm a scaredy cat too LOL! By the way, it's not an issue for me as I don't use public transport at all these day, it's over priced AND unreliable AND there are too many people with noisy headphones on too! Oh and not forgetting the people screaming down their phones "WHAT? OH YEAH, I'M ON THE BUS. I'LL BE THERE IN 2 MINUTES, YEAH, I'LL SEE YOU THEN. YEAH 2 MINUTES!" My response (in my head of course) "In 2 minutes you might have to surgically remove your mobile from where the sun don't shine love!"

I normally just ignore it. I will try to ignore it or if the music is quite nice, I will try to enjoy it. I would rather move away myself than have a confrontation and fight it out with tongue and fists. :P

Just leave 'em alone is what I do. I have tried to change seats sometime if they were annoying. One time, a person was playing some of my favorite music, blaring out of their headphones-- I just leaned in and enjoyed the songs!

But it's rude and anti-social - why should I have to listen to their music when i don't want to? I just want some peace to read my book

I tried looking back at the person and making eye contact and turning around. The person eventually turned it down, I guess they realized. I wouldnt recommend that with everyone though, some people can freak out and be a tough guy you know "WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?"

Hi there. When your sitting in a bus quietly minding your own business or in a quiet place reading, and someone with loud ear phones sits down beside you, you just grab the wire of the earphones and cut it in hal lol.... Probably try to ignore the best I can... Really dont know
