We are going on holiday and traveling by train this year.
Has anyone got any advice on how to keep my 1 year old son entertained on a train for 2 hours.
He can walk and run, so it will be hard to keep him from running up and down the train.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what would keep him happy for the journey?

This is a good question and I hope I can help out my two young children 3 and 5 go on holiday with my x mother inlaw once a year and its an 1hour and half trip. We normally cover food and drink. Then its drawing books and pencils or crayons. They each take a little bag with their toys in it eg. cars, motorbikes, books etc. But the best thing I think that she does is a new toy which she gives to them wrapped up like a present and gives it half way through the trip. So once they are bored its the new toy that will just about get them over the line until they arrive. Goodluck and I hope you enjoy your holiday. p.s let him have the window seat.lol

Thanks for your advice, he likes to eat so that would be a great idea and the drawing book is a nice idea, he usually likes to draw in them for abit and then rip them up to bits and play with the paper. the present idea is good too because he likes ripping things up.

In my opinion, I think you will have a hard time trying to humor and entertain him. A one year old kid appears to be most active, and yes, you are right. You are going to have a good jog running after him. To keep him happy is not a problem, to run after him and yet still feel refresh is a problem. You might someone to help take turns. These kids never seem to get tired when there is play in a new environment. However, some kids may not like the noise and will make even louder noise. You might need to bring along his favourites sooties.

Have fun, don't worry about the train ride. The two hours will go by so quick, the little guy will be fascinated with everything. I read your other responses, they all sound good. Toys, and snacks and looking out the window. Let us know when you leave.

My advice would be :
Know ahead that he will be antsy and be able to deal with it.
Take a lot of things for him to do – books, puzzles, favorite toy, etc.
Play with him on the ride maybe it will keep him seated.
Take snacks- so when he starts to want to explore and gets antsy- you can give him a snack and hopefully he will relax.
Let him walk around a little with you with him- I think it is allowed isn’t it?
Have a great trip!

Hi, joey, allow him to enjoy as he wish. Let him walk and run around within the coach of your train. It is natural for a child walk and run here and there as it give them a lot of happiness. Let him do whatever he likes. Other passengers will also enjoy your child's walking and running. Your son will keep other passengers also in happy.

Hi joey~
I hope all would be well with your holiday. Whenever I bring my son to my husband's hometown, it would be a 2 and a half hour plane ride. So what I do, is make sure I bring his favorite toy, usually a plane, diapers (when he was younger), snacks, and the air hostesses will give a supply of coloring/drawing books. It also helps if you schedule the time of your travel around his nap time.. So he spends a small amount of awake time in the train.
However, if your son is like mine, who doesn't believe in nap times, just bear with it.. Usually they'll be excited but not over hyper because they'll be shy of the strangers around them.
Although, i do advise against the lights and noise type of toys because some people don't take kindly to it when they're travelling.
I hope you have a safe journey.. good luck.. have patience and enjoy yourselves! Take care~~

You can try to find some games that you can play together sitting down. Like maybe card games if he's allowed to play with those. Or even bringing his toys along will keep him busy for awhile.

Restricting the movement of your child may be detrimental at this stage. But at the same time, you need to keep a constant watch on him when you are in train. You need to keep him out of any possible danger. The best thing would be to let him be himself. If the people are friendly, you can even let him mingle with them.He may also like the sceneries.

You will probably find that your son will probably won't want to run up and down the train because there are a lot of other people that he doesn't know on there, he will probably stay by your side most of the time. I would bring a few of his favourite toys, try and pick the quieter ones and bring lots of snacks. Hope you enjoy your holiday.
