The Smoking Ban is about to Arrive

In the UK the smoking ban will come into effect on the 1st of July 2007. People will no longer be legally allowed to smoke in public places including bars and restaurants. Personally I can't wait for the ban. I live in an apartment block and people will no longer be able to smoke in the building apart from there own apartments. However, I will be surprised if the ban will be fully enforced. I will probably still have to endure hallway carpets littered with cigarette ash and elevators full of smoke. Are you for or against such a ban?

I think our state, Kerala in India was the first government to ban smoking in public places including restaurants and bars. The law is in force since 1997. There is considerable change in the smoking habbit of people. Smoking inside buses, theatres and restaurants are not to be seen anywhere. But people use to smoke by the side of the road but without affecting others. At the beginning the police were very active, but now things are taken a little easy. The ban is good. But strict implimentation is tough. That is the case here. I don't know how it will work in the other countries.

That's fascinating to know. I've always been interested in Kerala and even thought about travelling there once.

It has already been implemented where I live and it is so much better. I love it, resturants dont stink anymore, and the waiting times are a lot less because you dont have to specify whether you want smoking or not smoking. Everything is more enjoyable and I don't gag walking in and out of grocery stores.

I agree. Clean air in a restaurant is something I'll now appreciate.

A good thing. What arguments can be made against it? Usually the centre around the 'right' of the smoker to smoke yet ignore the 'right' of the non-smoker not to inhale smoke. all the best urban

I'm definitely in favor of these kinds of bans. Some parts of the United States already have this, but not where I live. I hope they make a ban where I live soon.

I was in Cork at the end of last year and I did notice some problems, however. All the smokers go outside nd huddle around the doorway so when you go to look at the menu displayed outside a restaurant, you have to stand in a cloud of horrible cig smoke. Also, I found I was still smelling quite smoky just from being out on the street during the day - becasue everyone smokes as they walk around - presumably to fit another in before the next pub or cafe

That's right and I have to admit that I was quite surprised at the success with its implementation. There was not the down turn in sales at pubs and bars as was predicted by some.

As an ex smoker living with smoker I have mixed feelings on it.You're infringing on the smoker's rights by banning them for a habit most can't control. On the other hand it is a nasty habit and non smoker's shouldn't have to endure it.In a perfect world, there would be entirely smoking or non smoking establishments so everyone would be happy and not feel ostracized.;-)
