Missing button on chair

What should you do about a missing button on a chair, when you've lost the original? Should you put another mismatched button on the chair, or simply leave the button off? Is there a way to use some spare chair fabric to make a matching button?
My favorite rocking chair is missing a button, and I'd love to know if there is a way to salvage it, without having to toss it to the curb.

I would either replace all the buttons with matching new ones or if you can find an identical replacement, use that. Normally, there is some fabric on the underside of the skirt of the chair (not a great deal) if you need to cover something. Good luck.
