Simply put it is the moisture inside that expands and causes the kernal to explode. Fortunatly since it is a yummy treat. Easy to store and hand for those times when you need a treat and there is nothing quite as good in the house. You can indeed grow it in your backyard. It grows like corn does and so it easy for the backyard gardener. Good luck with this.

The active "pop" agent is, of all things, water. As the kernel is heated, the water is heated to steam and pressure builds up in the kernel. When the pressure exceeds the strength of the kernel covering, the seed covering breaks and "POP!" When this happens, the kernel contents (mostly starchy endosperm) expands to form a fluffy, white, and delicious piece of popcorn.

You have to buy a specific type of corn and then take it off the ear before it will pop. The heat is what makes the shell pop open and the kernel explode. If it weren't for the high heat, the shell wouldn't be able to pop open. You can check Burpee or Burton for popcorn kernels that you can use for popcorn but I think the planting season has already passed.
