I think my kitty is ill....

When I wasn't woken up this morning by his meows to feed him, I thought something was wrong. When he wasn't sitting outside the bathroom after my shower, I thought something was wrong. I called his name and he didn't come. When I walked into the kitchen and put food in his bowl, he didn't come, then I really knew something was wrong. I finally found him sitting in the closet. He was just looking at me with pitiful eyes. I coaxed him out of the closet and gave him a good pat down to see if he was physically hurt. Seemed ok. I then picked him up (which he usually hates) and when he didn't meow, I really knew he was ill. I put him down in front of the food bowl. He walked away. The last I saw of him he was slinking way back into the depths of the closet. I hated to leave him for work because he just seemed..well..pitiful. And I'm not one to just rush to the vet. I'm sure he will be fine by this afternoon. It just breaks my heart to see him this way. And unlike a child, he can't tell me what is wrong. Do you get this way with your cat? Do you just know when they are not feeling well?

I try not to rush to the vet when the cats come down with something. One of my cats had a few days on and off of sneezing. Come to find out it was the cat litter. We now use cedariffic and it is great. No more sneezing. Until she got better, she got the royal treatment.

I"m the same way about not rushing to the vet. My other cat was not eating for a while and when he would eat he would vomit. I took him to the vet after about 2 days of this. Let's say $500 and five days later he was fine. The vet did nothing but give him some IV liquids and took x-rays. He just got better on his own. Possible stomach irritation that just went away on his own. But yes, you are right. The royal treatment comes out.

Have you taken your kitty to the vet? If not, why? No, animals cannot tell you what is bothering them but you can tell from their body language. My husband and I own 35 cats. When one of them has a dramatic behavioral change, we take it seriously and we go to the vet. Yes, it is time consuming and expensive. But our animals are our family. You would not let your child's illness go unattended, would you? Do not let your pet's illness go unattended, either. I hope you make the right decision regarding your pet's health.

35 cats?? Wow! I am certainly not ignoring his illness or behavior. I have been keeping a very close eye on him, hence why I am not out tonight. But like humans, sometimes these things can come and go. He has come out of the closet looking for attention, however I don't think he has eaten. But at least he's being a little more social. I figured I would give it 24 hours and if he has not at least eaten, I will take him to the vet. Thank you for your advice. But rest assured, I am certainly not ignoring it, just observing for now.

Yes I get this way with all my animals. They are part of the family, so it is hard to think of them as just an animal. My cat who will be a year old in September sometimes becomes obsessed with a certain area of the house. If she sees a bug or something in that area (we live in Florida so bugs are common) she will sit and stare at that area all day hoping that another bug will surface. I hope your cat feels better soon.

Isn't it funny how we can sense these things in our animals. Like you say, they are part of the family and we just know when they are not acting 'right'. Thanks for the well wishes.

you say you're not one to rush to the vet, and neither am i, but when your cat makes such a drastic change and wants to hide, he's sick. cats will exhibit this behavior when they're ill. i would sincerely, if he's still doing this tomorrow, to get him an appointment. good luck with that, i sure hope he gets to feeling better.

Oh you are absolotely right. He's definatly under the weather. But sometimes, just like humans, they snap out of it. If he's not better soon I will most definatly bring him to the vet.

I hope that he feels better today after all, if he is actually sick! I'm not sure where you're located, but it has been disgustingly hot around here the past few days. My cats have chosen to simply lay around more than usual (usually on the tiled kitchen floor or any other surface that is cooler), and have not had much of an appetite due to the heat.

yes I thought of that too. that it's just the heat that has gotten to him. But he's hiding in the back of the closet, it must be pretty warm back there. But I did lower the AC in the house hoping that might help. Thanks for the well wishes.
