I saw this great article on msn.com and wanted to share: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Taxes/AvoidAnAudit/TaxRecordsYouCanToss.aspx?GT1=10120 If you're like I am, you wonder how long you should keep your tax records, what can be tossed, what you should keep, etc. I found this article so helpful, I thought others would too. I have every single one of my tax returns starting from my first job almost 30 years ago. Uuuuuggghhhhh. Glad to know I can safely have a bonfire now without the worry of the IRS knocking on my door tomorrow! LOL What about you? What have you done with your mountains of paperwork over the years?!

It funny that you've brought this up now. Since last October when I moved a number of boxes out of my closet I've been meaning to go through and get rid of stuff. I finally started last week and I made a really good dent in it already. I'm determined NOT to put them back in the closet as I refuse to have to go through them if and when I move again.

The great thing about moving I've found is - each time you move you throw out more stuff so you have less to move! LOL

I keep my receipts for at least 10 years, but there are some that only have to be kept for 7. I recently had to go thru several boxes I had in storage and was able to get rid of a few completely. I'm glad I invested in a shredder since there are so many reports of identity theft but to be on the safe side, I try to burn the shredded documents too. You can't be too careful anymore.

You're right - you can't be too careful. I usually burn anything with any personal information on it too.
