How to survive

I think it should be a course in the high schools to teach the children hwo to survive without power, cable, phones, isp and all the everyday fun stuff we all live with. What I mean is... Way back a few years ago when the towers were hit, I was at work. I can so clearly remember that sad shocking day. The girls I was working with that day and I were having a discussion about what to do if we were to lose our power. When I asked them what they would do if our electicity were to be lost for a long period of time, what would they do? Both of them replied that they would go stay with 'mom.' Duh, MOM would not have any power either! My point is, the younger generation has no clue how to survive if they had to. I think it should be a required course to take in high school before they can graduate. The schools teach BS now, not what is needed to live day to day. Not how to do what we all have to do to actually LIVE. How is writing an essay, doing stupid algebra, or doing research for days on end going to help us when we really need to know how to survive?
