I just read in a magazine that your suppose to take your child to the dentist by their first birthday. My daughter is turning 2 on July 12 and I never took her yet. I know i'm a bad mom. Am I the only one?

I took my daughter early but not at a year. I did start brushing her teeth with no toothpaste from the time she first had teeth. I don't believe in using the "childrens" toothpaste, they are extremely sugary tasting and taste like candy. Children don't need to brush their teeth with something that tastes like candy. Seriously, thats unnecessary.

I never heard that. Our doctors all said to take them when they turned 3. Only my oldest has been to the dentist. She went for her Kindergarten physical a couple months before she turned 5. That was 2 years ago.
My 5, 4 and 1 year olds have never been to the dentist. It's just not something I think about much. The last time I went to the dentist was when I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 21 (9 years ago). I have no fillings and have only had 1 cavity my whole life. Shrug.

My daughter didn't even have teeth on her first birthday, and I think my son only had 2. The standard advice here is age 3, and even then the dentist only "counts" their teeth while doing a quick visual inspection. Our dentist didn't do a proper checkup with x-rays until the kids were around 4 or 5. The first couple of visits at age 3, were mainly about getting them used to the idea of visiting the dentist, and taking good care of their teeth.

You are NOT a bad mom. Just the fact that you are on here asking for advice shows that you care about your daughter's health. That doesn't sound like a bad mom to me.
As for taking children to the dentist... I didn't take either one of my children to the dentist until they went to school (and I only did it then because our state makes it mandatory for school aged children to have a dental exam on file with the school district) I homeschool now, and do not take my children to the dentist at all. There are a lot of reasons I choose not to take them, stemming from health concerns and the fact that dentists do not let parents come into the room with their child (which I find disturbing) and both of my children's teeth are healthy.
My children use Tom's Of Maine toothpaste that contains no flouride, contrary to popular demand, and their teeth are strong.
As long as your daughter isn't complaining of any pain in her mouth and you don't notice any tooth decay, I'd say it's up to you whether you want to take her to the dentist at all.

Your not a bad mom for not taking your child to the dentist... I didn't take my son until he was 3 years old cause i knew that he wouldn't sit still anyway and theirs alot of dentist that won't take small children here in Wisconsin anyway I have to actually go to Michigan to a dentist to have my son seen.. I know it sounds crazy but it's true..
