i don't know how to make it from scratch but instead of using the ragu sauce, I now use tomato paste (del monte) which is much much cheaper. i just need to dilute the tomato concentrate paste into a huge bowl of sauce. i have a feeling the ragu ready made sauce is also more expensive because it comes in a glass container, and ti can't be cheap to manufacture those. usually i throw them away too so it's a waste!

I don't know if you're looking for one made completely from scratch, or just better than the jarred ones. This is how I make mine: 1 medium onion 3-4 cloves garlic 1 lb. ground beef 1 lb. Italian sausage 28 oz can diced tomatoes 29 oz can tomato sauce 12 oz can tomato paste 1/4 cup Italian seasoning 2-3 Tbsp Sugar Brown the meat with the onion and garlic, in large sauce pan, till done. Drain well. Put back in pan and add the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for at least 30 minutes. You can also add extra veggies to this. We've put in tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, whatever sounds good to you. We LOVE this meal. Another good variation is to make Baked Spaghetti. Make the sauce above. Meanwhile cook about 8 servings of noodles till al dente. Spray a 13x9 inch pan with canola or olive oil. Mix noodles with 1 slightly beaten egg, 1/2 cup milk, and 1/2 tsp. salt. Put this in the pan, then put sauce on top. Bake in a 350* oven for 20 minutes. Then sprinkle 1 to 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese on top and cook for an additional 10 minutes or until cheese is melted. If you try it let me know what you think.
