How many published writers do we have here?

You published writers here let us know what type of stuff you write: nonfiction, poetry, how to, fiction, what genre, etc. Do you earn your living at it or is it part time? Do you write for the internet, magazines, novels or all of them? Are you in writing groups that help you by critiquing your work and vice versa? Any hints for us who are just beginning or thinking about beginning, other than getting better and learning to spell.

I have been published, but not for pay. I recently had a short story published in a local magazine. The purpose was for the exposure, not pay. And I had a poem published in the newspaper back when I was a teenager. Again, not for pay. I have been submitting short stories and poetry to magazines while I edit my novel. So far I have had no takers. I have had some poetry "published" online, again not for pay. I am a member of a writing group in my town. We all benefit from each other's advice. We also have a couple of self-published authors in our group and are learning from their mistakes. People in the group turn to me when it comes to grammar and spelling since I seem to "know it all". I research online and share it with the other members of the group as far as agents and getting published.

Thanks, it looks like you are making good efforts. My problem is I seldom get a writing project finished. I did do one science fiction story and submitted it to a magazine, then two days after mailing it while trying to get to sleep, I realized there was a huge problem with it. So I was actually relieved and not a bit suprised when it was rejected. I've started something else twice, the first attempt was lost in a hard disk melt down(I know I should have backed it up) and I haven't worked on the second attempt in about 6 months.

I sent a submission for the first novel I wrote to an agent. I then started working on my second novel. I met with other authors. I learned a lot more and found that that first novel is going to need some major editing. Once I am finished the novel I am currently working on, I will go back to the first and edit it again. I only edited it once or twice and it takes several edits to make a story perfect. You have to make it as perfect as you possibly can. I know that first novel is probably so totally uninteresting because I have learned so much since I wrote it. It needs a major overhaul, but I won't give up. Don't ever give up. Quitters never win.

I hope your second novel goes well and you get your first one in order. I have a friend who published a story in a magazine way back when we were in graduate. Now he has retired early and is trying to publish a novel he has written, but like you it hasn't happened. Knowing him, he probably has written a couple of more since then.

I've been published, but I'm not yet making a full-time living from it. I've published a novel, short stories, and many articles. I used to write a column on American fiction authors until the site decided to stop paying. I also run an online writing workshop, Cacoethes Scribendi. I suggest writing daily, even if it's only for 3 minutes. Do writing exercises and read good books on the craft of writing. The Gotham Writer's Workshop is a good book. I also recommend The Fiction Writer's Workshop and Writing Fiction Step by Step by Josip Novakovich. Join a writer's group where you can receive honest feedback. Read daily as well. I wish you the best.

Thanks, I afraid I may never obtain the diligence to get far as a writer. I have problems writing every few months or so much less daily. I read that one of the great Science Fiction writers wrote at leat an hour a day no matter what; I guess that is one thing that helped make him great.
