I had a terribly lazy and cheap boyfriend when I was young. One year, for Valentine's Day, he grabbed a blank card from his sister's desk drawer while he was visiting, opened it and quickly signed his name and gave it to me as my "Valentine's Day gift." The card was a birthday card and the message on front read, "To My Beloved Husband On His Special Day."

When I was 13, Atari and VCRs were still new and expensive. I had asked for either, but new both were long shots. But it didn't hurt to ask. Anyway, I always requested things that were more affordable. That year, I really wanted blank audio cassettes...at least two good ones. So, on Christmas day, we exchanged presents and I wanted to give mine out first and save mine for last. There was a pretty big pile, but in my mind, as long as it wasn't clothes, great. It was no secret my Mom did holiday shopping early and started in January LOL. Normally, my parents started with the clothes to build up anticipation. After opening 28 packages of tube socks, I was beginning to think this was some kind of joke and also thought that even that was a little excessive, especially since I didn't get any other clothing items. The next present were several Scotch Beta Tapes. Wow! VCR tapes...I couldn't wait to open the VCR! I was very visibly excited. After opening some more under clothing, and books, my Mom said she saved the best for last....I couldn't wait. Dad gave me a small box that I thought was rather small to be a VCR. When I opened it, their gift was a Buelleva wrist watch. There were 2 things wrong with it, first it wasn't American (I could have bought a nice old watch for half the price), and second it was a girls sized watch. That was okay! I waited for the "big" gift. Mom then asked why I still sat there? Well, I'm waiting for another gift...Both Mom and Dad were stunned. Dad even went upstairs to see if he missed something, and then went out to the car. When he came back in the room he told Mom that everything was given. Mom being slightly embarrassed, asked why I was so excited about the tapes? When I explained they were VCR tapes she almost turned white and asked Dad to verify what I said the tapes were. Still, I thought they were pulling my leg. Well, it got worse for them when I told them the watch was a girls watch. Don't get me wrong, I was still grateful, but except for the books and enough socks for six month without washing them, it was the thought that counted. Well, Dad felt really bad and in five days, he bought a used VCR (with a wired remote) for the family. That VCR lasted for almost 12 years. But the story with that VCR is for another day.....
