dogs howling and barking..

my dog jack doesnt usually do this but he is barking and howling tonight so much im not sure why, he started off with howling, so i went and saw him to see everything alright and he was fine, laying down on his bed while on the chain, so later on he starts barking and i thought oh something must be outside and he scaring it off, but theres not he just laying there being silly. he is usually the quiet one, while bundy barks her head off to get your attention as she is still a pup, but she has gone tonight with my partner to his farm as she is a farm dog and i left jack with me as he is protective, but he has stayed here that many times without her before i had her and even since i have had bundy and he has never been like this, i am so confused what to do, he isnt hungry or thirsty. what do you think? please help
