Palmetto bugging out

United States

Here in Florida we have these big ugly bugs called Palmetto bugs. When it rains a lot (like yesterday) it seems to drive them indoors. These bugs are related to the cockroach (think roach on steroids to make itbigger and acid to make it crazy and darn near unstoppable) though it doesn't matter how clean you keep your house they are going to be there. Well this morning I go into the bathroom minding my own business and look up and there is palmetto on the cieling by the door........ I am trapped with my pants down!!! Mind you I am terrified of these suckers. The memory of my first encounter with one (I am from AR we don't have these things there) leaves me in a cold sweat. I was here in FL visiting my mom (in this very house I now live in) and there was one out in the sunroom so mom says get the broom and whack it, I must not have heard the smirk in her voice as she said it cause I grabbed the broom like a good daughter prepared to whack the sucker. I go out there and give it a good whack and the darn bug looks at me and laughs!! Then he gives chase, I end up on the chair whimpering as my mom is laughing her butt off at me. Palmettos are built like a tank with a hard outer shell. You can't whack it with a broom and expect it to do anything but laugh at you and chase you. Well I managed to get out of the bathroom with no incident (if it had jumped me I would have died). Did I mention that palmettos are aggressive? They will chase you unprovoked. I went to the kitchen and grabbed the bug spray and came back to wage war. The bug spray is to stun it and knock it down off the cieling so I can smash it with something hard. The bug spray will stun the bug and if you use enough it might even kill it but don't be fooled by it laying belly up.....in a few hours it can revive itself and live

OMG--- I’m rolling on the floor laughing at this- Thanks for the great laugh at work- My co-workers are wondering what the heck is going on- We don’t have those in NY- and boy am I glad- Cockroaches are also not very common here- unless you have a pretty disgusting house- YUK! I can’t imagine-- I can picture the whole incident- the bug looking down—you going to the bathroom- It’s hard to hurry when you have to- All the time keeping your eye on the bug- I’m glad it didn’t jump on you- then I wouldn’t have read this great funny post- Boy those are sure tough little buggers!

Yes it is funny....now that it is over with lol. The palmetto is armored, and it flies. It is a big bug too anywhere from one and half inches to three inches easy. This one was relativly small as far as palmettos go it was only an inch and half long.

I can sympathize with you regarding the palmetto bugs. Imyself don't fear them but my poor granddaughter is terrified of them. We live in South Carolina and those suckers are every where. She won't go out on the back deck at night because they hang out there. I get the job of killer when she sees one.Boric acid is supposed to get rid of them it is supposed to eat away at thei legs. i need to get some today to put around the out side of the hose to keep them away.
