Hurricane Katrina

I know its been almost 2 years since, but what are your Katrina experiences? My Hubby was out on the boats, his family had a total of 5 that they had to keep tied down during the storm. I stayed at my mom's house in Biloxi, which was where I was still living at the time. About half way through the storm things started getting bad and the last time I talked to my hubby on the cell phone I heard a big noise, and then he said, "Ohh shoot! Gotta go!" and he hung up. I didn't get back in touch with him until a couple hours after the storm was over. It scared me to death! Fortunately no damage was done to my house, except a couple shingles were missing and a bunch of trees were down. My hubby's family ended up with only 2 boats left after the storm, but everyone that was on the boat were ok. If another bad hurricane comes through I'm definately going out of state, whether we're in an evacuation zone or not. Its just too much of a risk to take.

Katrina was bad, and there is supposed to be worse storms within the next few years. How's West Virginia? I've never lived there before, but I've visited there a couple times.

I live in Miami, we were Katrina's first stop when she was still just a wee category one. Everyone pretty much disregarded her, my family included, I basically ran out and bought a few batteries for our flashlights just in case but that was it. We also have accordion shutters in our windows, so we did at least close those since it takes like a second. We were without power for 8 days. Eight! It was pretty horrible and I'm SO glad we at least had batteries. I know we in Florida were so lucky, but it just shows how much of a beast that storm was. As a category one, it brought down part of a bridge here and trees and were down by the hundreds, one would think it was at least a Cat 3. We always, always prepare now - even if it's just a category 1.

Yeah, you never know how powerful a storm will be till it actually hits. We were out of power for a couple weeks, and it was the hottest two weeks ever! About 5 days after the storm my family went to Panama City to get a generator and food from my uncle, then returned to Biloxi.

Well, I went through some things, but I told myself definitely after Katrina that no matter what, I was getting my father and leaving town because he is older and I worried on that. But sadly, he passed away in May, so now it's get my kids and go! Personally, I have seen storms come and go, but Katrina was sobering. I live in the Mobile area, and though the storm wasn't as bad, it should have made one think. Now, in '04, Ivan was on it's way to us and it ended up battering Baldwin County and Florida. Then in '05 Katrina came and tore up Mississippi, some of us and Louisiana. I feel the next one to come our way, I need to hit the road and keep hitting it because I feel we won't be spared as in the last two storms.
