Dua Khalil was a girl of 17 years. She lived in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. It is not clear exactly what her "crime" was but depending on which source you read, she had either been seen speaking to a boy or had eloped and married him, the boy in question was not part of the strict Yezidi sect of which her family are members, he was a Sunni Muslim. Dua Khalil was seen to have shamed her family and the Yezidi community and this caused outrage. What is clear is that her family tricked her back from hiding and then, scores of men (some of whom are family members) kicked, beat and stoned her to death, with others looking on as the partially clothed and conscious girl has the life beaten out of her, over the course of about an hour. Her torture is finally ended when one of these "men" picks up a heavy rock and smashes her skull in with it. All these men are competing for the best place from which to take videos on their mobile phones while she is battered further. Don't look at the videos as they are awful, I couldn't sleep last night after viewing them. http://www.aina.org/news/20070425181603.htm These killings are frequent enough in Kurdish areas, as well as in other surrounding areas and have occurred for many centuries in communities where women bear the full burden of carrying the imputed family honour through their behavior whether real or imputed. While these crimes are not new, the transmission of them to the rest of the world is, in the era of modern technology. There has been outrage over this killing in particular as it is just so brutal, a teenage girl being kicked to death while hundreds of men urge the killers on? Hopefully the rage of the world directed on the perpetrators will force the communities who engage in this behavior to reassess their attitudes towards women and honour. Here is the petition against honour killings in Kurdistan, please sign out, maybe it will help. http://www.petitiononline.com/kurdish/petition-sign.html

Yes, its just unbelievable that people act this way. And worse, that the entire community supports them apparently!
