Does anyone really wash their hands that much?

Awhile back I was watching a 20/20 news special on ABC and they were talking about how most people simply run their hands under the water after going to the restroom. They don't even bother putting soap on their hands. And, that means they end up spreading communicable illnesses around their work or home. And, that most people should actively wash their hands for at least two minutes, with very warm water and soap to destroy viruses and germs on hands. But, I don't think most people do that. How long do you wash your hands before you leave the bathroom?

The rule of thumb in the restaurant business is to wash your hands in warm soapy water and sing Happy Birthday, and then all the germs should be killed. There was also a study years ago where bowls of mints were tested at the hostess stands in restaurants and 75% of them tested positive for urine, so that just proves people don't wash their hands like they should.

Technically, you should also get your paper towels BEFORE you wash your hands because once you touch the paper towel holder, you're hands are dirty again. Same with an air dryer, touching the button to dry your hands make them dirty again. I'm pretty weird about washing my hands and I totally wash my hands for probably at least 2 minutes. I find it absolutely disgusting when I see someone leave a public restroom and not wash their hands.

I've seen restaurant employees who do that. And, the second I get out of the bathroom I leave. I will not eat food in a place where a serving employee or waitress or cook has so obviously violated local health codes. It's against the law to do that. Those restaurants could get shut down for that and much less. If you ever see it again, please be sure to call your local health department to report it. They do want to hear about this stuff. And you could be saving one of the restaurant's customers from a bad hepatitus infection. That's what happened with the Wolfgang Puck catering incident in Los Angelos. Did you hear about that?

Luckily I haven't seen this happen in restaurants with employees. It's actually usually just in a store or a restaurant where it's just another person there eating or even sometimes at my job in an office. It's horrid. I'd definitely report it if I saw it in a restaurant with their employee. I didn't hear about the wolfgang thing, that's crazy.

i wash my hands WITH soap after using the bathroom EVERYTIME. its just disgusting not too! i cant say that i wash my hands for a full 2 minutes, but i do use very hot water, soap, suds up and rinse then will soap my hands up once again before a final rinse. what i dont understand is why ppl would NOT use soap?! perhaps they dont care that they might be spreading germs to other ppl and places...but what about in their own mouths??!! now that thought is disgusting!

I've seen people do that before too. It is very gross and disgusting. Don't people care that they might make others sick? And, even so, the same people might make their own kids sick. Most parents handle the food their kids are going to eat. Most days, I wash my hands with antibacterial hand soap or dish detergent before handling my daughter's food. And, then rinse forever! I am so meticulous with her health. A person has to be, or their kid ends up sick all the time. And, the hand washing has to be done outside of the bathroom too, like during food preparation in the kitchen. When I was growing up, my mom was not very careful when handling raw chicken and the entire family got a flu like illness that lasted almost one entire month. At the time everyone assumed that it was flu, but years later I was reading that if you don't wash your hands or counter top surfaces after handling raw chicken you can spread the salmonella to your cooked food. I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

I just wash for a while. I don't pay attention to it too much. As sometimes too clean habit also gives you bad effect.

Yes, I am familiar with what you are talking about. It's called a compulsion. But, I am sure more people could happily suffer from a little compulsive hand washing and it would not hurt them. Germy hands could however. Thanks for dropping by. Always nice to talk to you, youless!

In my line of work, I must wash my hands. At least every hour while I'm at work--even if I just came back from the bathroom and washed them. I always use hot water and soap. I know it isn't 2 minutes, but I always make sure they are washed completely. It really grosses me out when people come out of the bathroom with out washing their hands! YUCK!!

I never wash my hands for 2 minutes...my average is 10-15s, but that's only if i'm in a clean environment like my home or somebody elses...if i'm in a public place like Canada's Wonderland or a Harvey's i sometimes don't even run my hands through water, i just walk out

I wash my hands regularly. Even when I'm not coming from the washroom. I think it's disturbing how people don't. I use soap and warm water all the time when I wash my hands. I wash them for two minutes in the morning and when I go to bed, because in the morning, I'm getting off all the gross germs that built up while I was sleeping, and at night just so I go to bed with clean hands. Anytime between that it's just a quick run through with soap and water, followed by hand sanitizer.

I am a fanatic about having clean hands! I have taught my children the 'happy birthday' remedy of washing hands. They know that they wash their hands and sing happy birthday to themselves at the same time. When they are done singing, then the hands are clean. I do the same thing. It grosses me out when I see people who just do a quick rinse.

Hi there. Personally speaking I make sure too wash my hands decently I also educate our children on washing and drying there hands too... As a family we use a Anti bacterial Liquid Soap. My daughter and I had to use the toilets in a shopping center one day and like always theres a waiting line, during our waiting time, we had seen a half a dozen women and young girls, walk from the toilet cubicle straight to the outside door without washing there hands, and my daughter couldnt get over it, and kept quietly saying to me, eww mom there not washing there hands and they're spreading there germs, I just had to tell my daughter, dont worry about them, worry about ourselves and dont ever pick up that habit, she said to me, mom Im not dumb you know and I always wash my hands. For me that was a proud moment to hear my daughter is looking after her own hygiene...

It is really a good hapbit to wash your hands everytime you are in the bathroom . But, I don't often wash my hands with soap in the public toilets for some reason there is no soap available all the time if there is a soap I will soap my hand to lessen the spread of some illnesses

If to wash hands should take two minutes each time,I think that there is nobody washing hands everyday. In most instances,we just let the water run our hands simply after going to the restroom;unless in some special moments,we will use some soap or washing-hands latex, even then it won't exceed two minutes.Although we all know that there are so much viruse and germs on hands, nearly nobody care.

Not very many people wash their hands but I forget to wash my hands myself at home! If I am at a friends or relative's house, then I wash my hands because it is showing good manners and I don't want anyone who I know catch a cold or get very sick. Using sanatizer always helps if you can't wash your hands.

Absolutely! I wash my hands with soap and water every time I use the rest room, and every time I blow my nose or anything like that too. Clean hands are the first defense in germ removal. You won't pick them up and make yourself sick, or pass it along to others, if people would just do this simple task each and every time. I haven't had a cold, flu, or anything in over 2 years and I attribute that to good hand washing. As a nurse, we learned that hand washing is a must! Even my 4 year old grandson has been taught to wash his hands thouroughly with soap and water each and every time he uses the bathroom. Those who don't make this a practice are unfairly passing their germs along to others.

Yes, this is certainly a good and healthy habit to wash our hands well with soap before we take rest or feed up by hands. Since hands are our prime organs for contacting any thing in this world, there is a higher chance of bacteria, virus or simply dust contamination through our hands to our food and other delicate parts of our body! So we must wash our hands regularly. I do it thrice daily with soap. Also after arriving at home form outside activities, we must wash both our hands as well as feet well to minimize any effect of outside contaminations. This is certainly a good and healthy habit that I may share with all readers through this response. Thanks for this topic on healthy habits.
