A typical English summer:-( - how has the weather affected your summer plans?

July 3, 2007 7:24am CST
The skies have darkened from light grey to a menacing darker shade, the clouds have begun to pile up to form a uniform heavy dark mass, the air has become oppressive, and my cat has raced inside and is now curled up under the sofa. Distant rumblings appear closer now, louder and more sustained, and as the last of the sunlight vanishes behind a blanket of rapidly moving black clouds, the first fat drops of rain begin to fall. A sudden, blinding flash temporarily blinds, followed a scant few second later by a deafening explosion of sound as the thunder shakes the window pane. Torrents of water stream down the windows, as yet another blinding, heavy downpour coalesces to form an instant river in the road outside. Puddles become pools become lakes become rivers become torrents as the relentless rain falls from the bulging black clouds above. What used to be a garden now resembles a paddy field, the water laps around the car, the level rising to the hub caps before sloshing over the drive to add it's contribution to the raging torrent in the road. But within a scant ten minutes the clouds have moved on, the raindrops slow in descent to finally cease. A faint trace of blue sky lightens as the remnants of the storm pass on, leaving the river in the road to slowly die back to a stream, and then a gentle trickle. Gradually the standing water in the garden drains away, and the first hint of sunshine lightens the scene as the last of the rain disappears to leave behind gleaming pavement and rain-washed trees. I stand at the window, looking out and the black clouds on the horizon, knowing that within a short while the cycle will begin again. All plans for a day out now cancelled, I wonder as I sit at my keyboard.....has this awful weather ruined your summer holiday plans?

That was so beautifully discribed, I was almost there to see it. The only difference is that in Texas the temp would drop 10 to 20ยบ And you'd have a few pleasant moments before & after the rain to enjoy cool air!

Thanks hun, I wish the weather was a little warmer right now. This morning seems fairly clear but already the clouds are threatening.

Well, its Independence Day in the U.S. and, at least in Austin, its raining. In fact, I spotted a mushroom in the yard this morning - & we don't usually get them in JULY! because if the dry! Texas ain't dry this year!

Gee mate, the way you describe it, it doesn't sound awful...it sounds magnificent. It was as if I was standing at your window looking out. It's winter here and the weather changes constantly. As I type I can see out my window to stretches of insipid blue sky with streaks and puffballs of white cloud. A mid grey group of clouds is moving in from the west, it was billowing now it is diffusing. There is a breeze, quite gentle that is stirring the wind chimes on my verandah into a lilting song. The day itself is grey and coldeven though the sun manages to poke through the clouds every now and then. I have no plans, for anytime, each day merges with the last and the next.

Thank you hun, for your compliments *blushing* The sun is actually shining today, and I'm hoping the weather will continue to be good for a break away in a couple of weeks time

Hi, that's a great bit of writing! Well luckily I didn't have too many plans for the summer apart from work, so I suppose at least the weather isn't depressing me because I can't go to the local beach lol I was planning on going camping this weekend, but if it keeps up like this, then I will prefer to stay at home, not to worry though I expect there will be other weekends!

Oh my goodness recycledgoth...how poetic your description was I thought I was reading a novel here..LOL.. I have heard how so many places have had horrible downpours...just upstate NY and then in Texas have been the worse--also other areas of the US...We had some real winner storms just last week and I had to keep my computer off most of the time--but now it's been peaceful and calm--as for "summer" plans...really don't have anything special lined up to begin with

*blushing* why thank you Pyewacket. Here in the UK we have had some dreadful floods, and still the rain falls.

Nah - we are used to it now! lol I was on holiday last week in Aviemore (the Highlands) and although there was more rain than usual we still had some very nice days and had a great time! Having said that we didn't go out as much as usual so it was also quite relaxing! xxx

LOL I almost feel sorry for the Wimbledon crowds. Today seems to have started fairly well, hopefully the rain will hold off at least until lunchtime :-)
