Do you tip the grocery deliverer?

I get groceries delivered to my house, mainly because I have an 11 month old and live in a condo. I can't hold a child and haul groceries up and down the stairs a thousand times. Anyway, I get my groceries delivered through Safeway. Safeway delivery says "our drivers do not accept tips." So I don't tip, but I feel awful! I don't like not tipping! Do you tip the person who delivers your groceries?

Oh I usually tip everyone and overly too because I know a lot of people don't tip or at least under tip. But the online grocery statement drivers do not accept tips. So it made me think twice. It's just ackward for me to tip so I wanted to see if anybody else tipped them if they're told not to. Maybe I should anyway! :)

That is a tricky one. I suspect that the receipt says that so that people don't feel obligated to tip the delivery people, or because the delivery people are already making a reasonable wage (unlike waiters/waitresses, who don't make minimum wage in some states). If you don't have cash on you, it is kinda of a moot point, but I would say offering candy or a drink would probably be appreciated! :)

I almost never have cash on me anyway, but I think the candy or drink is a great idea!

I feel just like you do. I like to get tips and I like to tip. I like to do unto others as I would like to be treated myself. And a tip sure brings a smile on a face. In the senior residence where my parents live it is also forbidden to tip the personnel. The management feels they pay the people good enough to live on. But the workers can accept some candy or occasionally a pound of coffee. You can ask the driver if he is really not allowed to accept a tip. And you can ask him if he is thirsty and would like a can of coke to take along for himself or if hed rather would like a chocolate bar or such. This would save him money, too, and it would not look like a bribe.

The bad thing is that I never have cash on me. So I feel like asking them if they can accept a tip but then I wouldn't have any cash to give them! I tried offering a coke one time but the guy refused and said he has a full bottle of iced tea in the car or something. I've been thinking about the chocolate bar thing, thanks I think I will try that!

Well, if they say not to tip, then I guess it's alright. But, I do understand how you feel. Once when I was shopping at the Kroger, a young bag boy ran my groceries out to my car. And, I paid him $5.00. I felt it was totally worth it. There were two full carts of groceries and I didn't feel like lugging the stuff through the crowded parking lot. Don't feel bad. The delivery guys get paid a signifigant amount and it's not the hardest work. Maybe you could over-tip somone else. That way it's almost the same thing.

Wow! That was nice! I dated a guy once who worked at the grocery store on The Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs as a bag boy. The bag boys don't get paid at all through the store. They only make money in tips. But they can get up to $200 in one night easily, yet other nights they only make a little bit. He would get his tips in candy bars, soda, baseball cards, movie tickets, etc as well. Apparently there is like a year's waiting list to work there, but I don't think I could handle the ups and downs in the payments.

I do not have the pleasure of grocery delivered where I stay at, but I do tip the grocery bagger when I go to the store. Most times it is against the store policy to accept tips, but I normally tell them to buy a cold soda, even though I give them more than what a soda cost. It just makes you feel good.
